Photo credit: Chris Hollo/Grand Ole Opry

Troy Lee Gentry passed away Sept. 8, 2017 in Medford, N.J., at the age of 50. He was born April 5, 1967 in Lexington, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Patricia Gentry, and his brother, Keith Gentry.

A loving father and devoted husband, Gentry is survived by his wife, Angie Gentry (nee McClure), as well as his daughters, Taylor and Kaylee.

He was a graduate of Lexington Community College and he attended the University of Kentucky.

Gentry was best known as a member of the award-winning country duo Montgomery Gentry, along with his longtime friend Eddie Montgomery. The pair began performing together in their home state of Kentucky and released their debut album, “Tattoos & Scars,” in 1999. The duo, whose trademark sound combined Southern Rock and Country, scored a string of No. 1 hits, including “If You Ever Stop Loving Me,” “Something to Be Proud Of,” “Lucky Man,” “Back When I Knew It All” and “Roll With Me.” They achieved Platinum certification on three of their albums and Gold certification on three others.

In 2009 the duo became members of the venerable Grand Ole Opry, which was Gentry’s proudest professional achievement.

The band was planning to release an album of new music in 2018 to mark their 20th anniversary as a duo.

A generous man, Gentry supported numerous charitable organizations including Make A Wish Foundation and T.J. Martell Foundation as well as military-related charities such as The USO. He was an active supporter of breast cancer awareness and research. Montgomery Gentry was honored with the Academy of Country Music’s Humanitarian Award in 2009.

Known for his wide smile, Gentry was personally driven by faith, family and living life to the fullest. He was happiest on the water with his family. He enjoyed both wake boarding and snow skiing. Gentry was also an active supporter of various athletic teams at his daughter Kaylee’s school.

A follower of Christ, Gentry faithfully attended Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, Tenn., when he was not on the road. One of his favorite bible verses was Deuteronomy 31:6, which says, “Be strong and courageous; don’t be terrified or afraid of them. For it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you.”

A public celebration of Gentry’s life will take place Thursday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. CT at the Grand Ole Opry House, located at 2804 Opryland Drive, Nashville, TN. 37214. A private, family internment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to T.J. Martell Foundation or The American Red Cross for hurricane relief.

Montgomery Gentry Celebrates America’s Heroes

Superstar Duo Recognizing American Heroes at Every Tour Stop this Summer

Montgomery Gentry

Country stars, Montgomery Gentry, in response to the recent tragedies that have unfolded in the United States, want to help inspire hope and positivity in America by celebrating and recognizing the many heroes of our great nation. Eddie and Troy, long-time supporters of our military, first-responders, leaders, teachers, and unspoken everyday champions, are giving their fans a chance to submit stories and nominate their personal hero. Select stories will be featured on www.montgomerygentry.com and American Heroes will be chosen to receive concert tickets, meet & greet passes and to mingle with Montgomery Gentry at each of their concert stops this summer.

“We got an email from our fan club, “The Underground,” recently,” stated Troy Gentry.  “All he wanted was to take his son to one of our shows because of how much he had helped his family through some difficult times. He kept calling him his hero.  And then Boston happened, and Texas and now Oklahoma and we keep seeing these people stepping up to help and we think those people need to be celebrated.”

Troy Gentry, You’ve Been GHERMed!

Having a little bit more fun with celebrities! 🙂

Matt Williams and Troy Gentry

A little GHERMing on the driving range with Troy Gentry from Montgomery Gentry. How much do you think that ball might be worth on eBay? lol

Definition of a GHERM:

Someone who slavishly follows and sucks up to a celebrity. A fan to excessive degree. Usually applied to one who makes people uncomfortable by their adoration.
“That guy is such a gherm. He buys every piece of merchandise related to that singer and attends every show.”

A person not affiliated with the music industry but who has connections that can get them backstage concert access. They then get backstage and totally get in the way of those who are supposed to be there working. Term originated at Starwood Amphitheater in Antioch, TN during the summer of 1990.
“Wow, this load-out would be a breeze but the gherms at this Jimmy Buffet show are totally getting in the way!”

Album Review: Waylon: The Music Inside Vol. II

Waylon: The Music Inside Vol. IIIn December, Focus was able to cover the Waylon Jennings Tribute at the SiriusXM station in Nashville promoting the new tribute Album, “Waylon: The Music Inside Vol. II.” Well, now we got a chance to finally hear it! And it’s everything a true country fan could hope for.

Blending classic Waylon tunes with more contemporary production, the album features 11 songs covered by some great country names. Each artist pays wonderful tribute to the legend, while making the song distinctively his or her own.

One highlight of the album includes Mama by Jessi Colter, a heartfelt song she performed at the tribute that almost had Bocephus choking up. Jewel covers a beautiful version of Dreaming My Dreams with You, and Colt Ford puts his own rap spin on Only Daddy That Will Walk the Line.

Other standouts include Lonesome, Onry, and Mean by Dierks Bentley, I Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This by Justin Moore, and Love of the Common People by Josh Thompson. Each of these sounds as though the artist cut the original. I could certainly hear any of these songs making their way into these artist’s respective set lists.

Albums like this are a great way to introduce contemporary country fans to music they may not listen to. Sure, country has transformed over the years, but what better way to bridge the gap between the newer material and the material that paved the way. Not to mention, we’re keeping Waylon’s memory alive and well.

The album will be available for pre-order January 24, and in-stores February 7.

Waylon: The Music Inside Vol. II track listing:

1. Lonesome, Onry, and Mean – Dierks Bentley

2. Waymore’s Blues – Hank Williams Jr.

3. Good Ol’ Boys (Dukes of Hazzard Theme Song) – Montgomery Gentry

4. I Ain’t Livin’ Long Like This – Justin Moore

5. Bob Willis is Still the King – Jack Ingram

6. Only Daddy That Will Walk the Line – Colt Ford

7. Rainy Day Woman – Pat Green

8. Love of the Common People – Josh Thompson

9. Mama – Jessi Colter

10. Dreaming My Dreams With You – Jewel

Bonus Track

11. A Long Time Ago – Wyatt McCubbin
