Tin Pan South 2018 Night One Highlights

The 26th Annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival Presented by Regions Bank kicked off last night, as more than 80 songwriters hit the stages of 10 of Nashville’s top music venues. The “you never know who might show up at Tin Pan” rule held true, as several country stars joined in for special renditions of their hits.

Thomas Rhett joined his father, Rhett Akins, Bob DiPiero and The Warren Brothers on stage for BMI’s Rhett Akins & Friends show at the 3rd & Lindsley late show. The star power didn’t stop there, as LOCASH, Dustin Lynch and Jon Pardi also performed for an adoring audience. The “special guest” at the early 3rd & Lindsley show featuring hit writers Ashley Gorley and Chris DeStefano turned out to be Brett Young. Also appearing to perform his hit song “Kiss Somebody” was country newcomer Morgan Evans.

Tin Pan South partner Southwest Airlines returned this year with their “Surprise and Delight” campaign and shocked two attendees of the CMA Songwriter Series show featuring Larry Gatlin, Terry McBride, Aaron Tippin and Charlie Worsham with round-trip tickets to anywhere the airline flies domestically or internationally. Rumor has it Southwest may pop up at another Tin Pan show or two this week.

The BACON EGGS AND KEGS Festival A Success In Its First Year, Sells Out In Advance

The inaugural BACON EGGS AND KEGS festival held the weekend before last at First Tennessee Park was a real crowdpleaser for Nashvillians, selling out a day before the event.

It was a beautiful fall day in Nashville as a crowd lined up and streamed in through the gates anxiously-anticipating the brunch festival.

Festival goers were given mini plastic mugs to fill and treated to all-you-can-drink craft beer from various local companies, fruity hard cider offered by local makers, mimosas made with either grapefruit or orange juice, Irish cream coffee served hot or cold, tasty boozy root beer floats, and a 30-foot long bloody mary bar sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka featuring a smorgasbord of items to add to your large cup the staff fixed for you in spicy or regular bloody mary mix.  It was basically a brunch on sticks, if you pleased.  I know I indulged and thoroughly enjoyed it as you could add 5 extra items of your choice beyond the various flavors of rim seasoning, celery, and olive that came with each cup.  Unfortunately, the line got too long as those in attendance discovered the fabulousness of the huge bloody mary bar that featured boiled shrimp, bacon, boiled eggs, fried cheese sticks, chicken, pickles, olives, and much more to add to your drink as you pleased.  Needless to say, it was quite the hit and never could get that second round.  Oh, well, probably did not need another anyway, plenty of other tasty drinks to try all around.

Food was not included in the ticket price, but various enticing dining options of bunch items were available for purchase from several food trucks present offering generous dishes priced from $3 to $9 for everything from savory breakfast scrambles, bacon in a cup, shrimp & grits to waffles.

Festival goers could also participate in several fun activities to enjoy the day at the park by playing putt-putt golf, ping pong, giant jinga, cornhole, a huge bouncy house or find a comfy chair and/or table scattered all around the park to bask in the sunlight or find shade, too.

The festival planners who held the very first BACON EGGS AND KEGS festival in Seattle has already announced after the sell out of the event that it will return next year to Nashville.

It was a well-organized and fun event.  Hope to be able to partake in it next year.  Maybe next time I’ll brave the long line that is bound to form again to get that 2nd bloody mary from the awesome 30-foot bloody mary bar that is the hallmark of this festival.  Until then, cheers!

Pilgrimage Festival 2017: Wrap Up

On a normal Saturday in Franklin, Tennessee, you will see people checking out local produce at the Farmers Market. The Factory in Franklin will have a small crowd of people walking around and picking up unique gifts and maybe even making one at Third Coast Clay. This is not your normal Saturday in Franklin, that’s for sure.

An estimated 25,000 people from all over have swarmed in on this quiet town to attend The Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival.  The now widely-known festival all started as a simple idea from festival co-creator and front man of the pop/rock band Better Than Ezra, Kevin Griffin.  Griffin who is also a Franklin resident was on a jog just a few years ago when he passed by The Park at Harlinsdale, a century-old horse farm that sits on 230 acres of land. He envisioned not just a music festival, but an experience that would highlight the diverse musical artists, food, beer, wine, and art that is rooted in Middle Tennessee.

Going into the festival’s third year, they knew they had to make it bigger and that is exactly what happened when co-producer and newly-transplanted icon, Justin Timberlake, asked if he could perform.  In what is one of Timberlake’s only musical appearances of 2017, he doubled the attendance of the previous year and he showed up ready to play for his new hometown!

Closing out the first night of the two-day festival which featured incredible performances I caught by The Avett Brothers, The Shadowboxers, Ruby Amanfu with Steelism, and many more, Timberlake walked out to 25,000 people on their feet and applauding before he sang his first note. Proving that he is a class act, Timberlake forewent a big show opener and instead covered Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”, a prayer of sorts for the state that our country is currently in. With a bow of his head, Timberlake changed gears and ripped through hit after hit.  From “Drink You Away” and “Suit & Tie” to his closing numbers, the monster hits “Can’t Stop This Feeling!”, “Sexy Back”, and “Mirrors”, Timberlake had even the coolest East Nashville hipsters singing every word; making it a point to tell the crowd several times how much he loves his home state of Tennessee and that his new hometown is Franklin. It was clear, however, that no matter how much he loves Tennessee, Tennessee loves him even more!

The evening was highlighted when he reunited with Chris and Morgan Stapleton for the first time since their CMA Awards show duet.  Exchanging verses and taking turns doing each other’s background vocals on three of Stapleton’s songs.  The trio’s harmonies were so flawless that Timberlake’s band, “The Tennessee Kids”, couldn’t stop shaking their heads and neither could the audience.

As the night drew to a close and Timberlake took his final bow, it was clear that The Pilgrimage Festival delivered exactly what they said they would, a unique family-friendly experience that was for everyone! As the crowd filtered out onto Franklin Pike, you could already hear people making plans to come back next year.

Lobster lovers are invited to sample the savory Florida crustacean during Key West Lobsterfest, scheduled Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 10-13. The festival celebrates the start of the Florida Keys lobster season with a tasty “menu” of events highlighted by an open-air lobster feast on the island’s famed Duval Street.

The flavorful festivities kick off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, when lobster aficionados can gather at the Sunset Tiki Bar & Grille, 617 Front St., for a lobster boil that also includes shrimp, andouille sausage, crawfish, corn on the cob and new potatoes. Live entertainment and libation specials are to round out the evening’s action.

Known as spiny lobsters, the clawless crustaceans found in Keys waters offer sweet and tender meat. Lobster often is served steamed with drawn butter, baked and stuffed, in creamy bisque or cold in savory salads.

Fans can sample lobster dishes of all sorts at the Key West Lobsterfest Street Fair, set for noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in the 100 through 500 blocks of Duval. During this enticing festival “entrée,” chefs from local restaurants are to prepare lobster specialties ranging from tempting appetizers to traditional dinners with all the trimmings.

A free outdoor concert is slated for 1-10:30 p.m. with entertainers including Alphonse, Cool Breeze and the Durtbags performing from a stage at the intersection of Duval and Greene streets. Attendees also can browse and buy art, crafts and merchandise from onsite vendors.

Other Lobsterfest events include Friday afternoon’s “Reef & Ritas” catamaran sail and snorkel trip, a Friday night Duval Crawl of downtown Key West watering holes and a mouthwatering lobster brunch Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, 4 Charles St.
