8th ANNUAL T.J. MARTELL FOUNDATION NASHVILLE HONORS GALA TO SALUTE OUTSTANDING LEADERS ON FEBRUARY 29, 2016

The T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research will honor the following community leaders at their 8th Annual Nashville Honors Gala taking place at Nashville’s Omni Hotel on Monday, February 29, 2016. 

 

Mr. Aubrey Harwell – Spirit of Nashville Award

Mr. Brian Philips – Frances Preston Outstanding Music Industry Achievement Award

Dr. Jennifer Pietenpol – Medical Research Advancement Award

Mr. Kenny Rogers – Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award

FedEx Corporation – Outstanding Global Citizenship Award with

Mr. Frederick W. Smith accepting on behalf of more than 350,000 team members around the world.    

 

The 8th Annual Nashville Honors Gala is co-chaired by T.J. Martell Foundation board members, Dave Berryman, President of Gibson Guitar Corp. and Leslie Fram, CMT’s Senior Vice-President of Music Strategy. The evening is produced by the Emmy award winning team of Martin Fisher and Edie Hoback of High Five Entertainment and has raised over 3.5 million dollars since its inception in 2009.

About the Honorees: 

Mr. Aubrey Harwell – Spirit of Nashville Award

Aubrey Harwell has served as managing partner of Neal & Harwell since 1971 with his partner, the late James F. Neal. The firm is widely regarded as one of the premier litigation firms in the United States. A Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University School of Law graduate, Mr. Harwell is a highly respected business leader whose expertise and reputation is unprecedented. For over four decades, he has provided volunteer service and leadership to numerous local and national nonprofit and charitable organizations. Mr. Harwell has also served on many corporate boards, authored legal publications and is a frequent speaker across the United States. 

Mr. Brian Philips – Frances Preston Outstanding Music Industry Achievement Award

Brian Philips’ decade-plus leadership at Viacom’s CMT has garnered unprecedented ratings growth and program development during his tenure. Before joining CMT, Philips forged an illustrious career in radio across multiple music genres. He enjoys the unusual distinction of having been nominated as Billboard’s “Major Market PD of the Year” in three different formats (Top 40, Modern Rock and Country). While at Atlanta’s 99X, he was selected “Most Innovative Programmer in America” by Virtually Alternative magazine, and received the prestigious Rick Carroll Award for Programming. An alumnus of Leadership Music, Philips serves on a number of boards including the Country Music Association (CMA), NARAS and is member of the Board of Trustees for the Christmas Record Trust of Special Olympics International, to name a few.  

Dr. Jennifer Pietenpol – Medical Research Advancement Award

Dr. Jennifer Pietenpol is the Director of The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, the Benjamin F. Byrd, Jr. Professor of Molecular Oncology and Professor of Biochemistry, Cancer Biology and Otolaryngology. Her achievements in cancer research are many. She is the current associate editor for the journals Cancer Research and Cell Cycle and is on the Editorial Board for several journals including, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Breast Cancer Research, Carcinogenesis and Cancer Biology & Therapy. She is a member of the Cancer Center Advisory Board at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has chaired the American Cancer Society Institutional Review Group. In 2004, she received the Excellence in Teaching Award at Vanderbilt for her mentoring of graduate and medical students in the research setting. She earned her Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1990, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Oncology at Johns Hopkins University.

Mr. Kenny Rogers – Tony Martell Lifetime Entertainment Achievement Award

Pop and country music icon, Kenny Rogers has endeared music lovers across the globe with his unmistakable voice which has garnered 3 Grammy awards, 18 American Music Awards, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 8 Academy of Country Music Awards and 5 Country Music Association Awards. Kenny Rogers has received the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Entertainment Buyers Association, and he’s been awarded the Academy of Country Music’s “Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award” as well as their “Horatio Alger Award,” which is given to those who have led distinguished careers, despite their humble beginnings. 

Rogers is the 8th-best-selling male artist of all time with over 120 million records sold, 24 number 1 songs, and worldwide touring for decades. In 1985, Rogers participated in the historical USA For Africa recording of “We Are The World,” which raised millions of dollars to fight hunger and poverty. A year later, he co-chaired the “Hands Across America” fundraiser for America’s hungry. Still touring today, The “Favorite Singer of All Time” as polled by readers of USA TODAY and People magazine, is an avid songwriter, photographer and actor.
