Album Review: Jennifer Nettles | ‘That Girl’

Jennifer NettlesTo be honest, I always felt like it was only a matter of time before Jennifer Nettles became a solo artist.  She has always been the stand out person from Sugarland.  No disrespect to Kristian Bush.  He is very talented.  It’s just she always shone more brightly.  Even when Sugarland was a trio back on the very first album.

This new 11-track project from Jennifer Nettles entitled ‘That Girl’? The best words to describe it are eclectic, organic, and honest.  I love it! This album is like a fusion of several different styles of genres from different decades, but distinctly country at its very core.  Nettles’ distinctive voice is just as strong and full of honest emotion as always.  The production is more scaled back with a very organic feel throughout.

I especially loved the opportunity to hear Jennifer Nettles perform a showcase of most of this album live back during CRS in Nashville a little over a week ago to really get a feel of who she is as a solo artist.  It was a very classy stage, and she really knows how to put on a show!

My favorite off the album is the title track “That Girl”.  It’s just got this very cool vibe to it, and tells the story of what it feels like to be the other woman, not where the main character wants to be.

Another standout is “This Angel” a soft ballad with scaled back production without percussion, heartfelt lyrics, and the emotion-filled voice of Nettles brought me to tears.  Just beautiful.

Bottom line is Jennifer Nettles is back, and she’s better than ever as she shares some very emotional songs.  I’m diggin’ it!

Rated 5 out of 5 stars.
