Average Joe’s country artist JJ Lawhorn has just released his new 13-track album entitled ‘Original Good Ol’ Boy’ produced by Jeremy Stover and executive producer, Shannon “Fat Shan” Houchins.
To be honest, there was only one track on the entire album that I enjoyed. It was a surprisingly touching song at moments, but with a little too much cheesiness for my taste called “Good Ol’ Boys Like Us”. I liked the melody of this one, but even it made me cringe a little because of the lyrics with all of the references of good ol’ boys, pickup trucks, and slinging mud as it talked about what Heaven would be like for good ol’ boys aka rednecks.
Overall, I just think JJ Lawhorn is trying too hard to sound country; everything from his voice to the songs themselves filled with cliche references of slinging mud, pickup trucks, ect. All of it is just way overdone and unoriginal. It comes across as unnatural and forced in his singing throughout the album, and he doesn’t have a strong voice to fall back on. In the choruses of the songs when he’s not so focused on trying too hard to sound country, it comes across as more natural, but the rest of it is entirely too forced. Not an album that I would recommend.
Rated 1 out of 5 stars.

Of course everyone is “entitled to an opinion” and you have stated yours.
I’m not sure what type of Country Music you like (stuff that is new wave or pulling on traditional roots) but anyone who takes your advise on this album will certainly miss what 90+ % of music critics are calling “refreshing and genuine” . Check out the sampler online before you buy.
FYI: I heard this singer perform “Good Ol Boys Like us” (which you called chessiness)
and tell the story about boy that rolled a truck and was killed and the two others
that were injured but lived (one still in a wheelchair) and people have all levels of
faith (just like you do) and some think heaven may be a place (that is not boring).
Sorry you missed the drift and it would be good for you to meet JJ sometime and
hear him live and do another review.
Well I was friends with the guys that rolled this truck and the 2 that survived are in his video for sittin on a tailgate….not In a wheelchair. They flipped goin down a backroad too fast in a lifted Dodge Ram after the driver had been drinking. The driver didn’t have a seatbelt on and was thrown from the truck.
