Tegan Marie Gets The Star Treatment In Brand-New Opry NextStage Docu-Series

NASHVILLE, TENN. (March 1, 2019) – Warner Music Nashville and Sweety High Country sensation TEGAN MARIE is profiled in a brand-new docu-series tracing the path of her launch to stardom — OPRY NEXTSTAGE PRESENTS TEGAN MARIE: IN THE MAKING.

Created as part of the Grand Ole Opry’s latest year-long collaboration with four hand-picked rising Country artists (Riley Green, Tegan Marie, Tenille Townes, Travis Denning) the in-depth series was filmed over the course of Tegan Marie’s initial Nashville journey, capturing many of her milestone moments to date. The 4-part series is set to roll out over the next month with a new installment debuting each week with the first one live now on The Tennessean. Giving fans an early first look, a sizzle of the project premiered in January in front of a packed house at the Opry Nextstage kick-off concert at Nashville’s Ole Red with Sally Williams, General Manager, Grand Ole Opry / SVP, Programming & Artist Relations, Opry Entertainment, telling the crowd “The Opry is 93 years old and it is all of our responsibility to make sure it is still amazing for the next 93 years. You all are going to be part of that at we usher in the next generation to Country music!”

Featured in the video series are behind-the-scenes highlights of this 15-year-old phenom on the rise, including the moment she signed her record deal with Warner Music Nashville (making her the youngest major label artist in over 45 years); her Grand Ole Opry and NBC’s TODAY debuts; first concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium; high-flying performance from the top of the world-famous Empire State Building, and her Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade appearance on the Girls Scouts of America float.

TEGAN MARIE: IN THE MAKING also includes candid home videos dating all the way back to before the young star was discovered; in-depth interviews with Scott Hendricks (producer and EVP A&R, Warner Music Nashville) and her managers (co-founder and CCO of Sweety High, Veronica Zelle, and co-founder and CEO of Sweety High, Frank Simonetti); clips of Tegan Marie and her team celebrating her first track release, “Keep It Lit,” and much more. The series depicts Tegan Marie as both a regular teenage girl and an emerging Country talent, while giving fans just a taste of what’s to come.

Following the success of her two effervescent tracks – “Keep It Lit” and “I Know How To Make a Boy Cry,” Tegan Marie will continue making headlines this spring with tour dates across the country, including a string of shows at the Grand Ole Opry as part of the Opry Nextstage program. Currently working on new music in Nashville, she’s gearing up to release a new song (produced by Scott Hendricks and Nathan Chapman) later this month.

Tenille Townes’ “White Horse” Out Today

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Emerging singer, songwriter and performer Tenille Townes’ new song, “White Horse,” is out today. Listen/share HERE.

Written by Townes, Daniel Tashian and Jeremy Spillman, the song is the second track unveiled from Townes’ forthcoming debut album, produced by Jay Joyce and due later this year on Columbia Nashville. Of the song, Townes comments, “‘White Horse’ is a song about how love can look a little bit differently than we might expect it to. I think we grow up in our society completely surrounded by that fairy tale idea of what love should be, but maybe love is even bigger than that. I think it’s important to be open hearted and to push the boundaries of what society might build up in our expectations. I love that this song stands strongly in the idea that love isn’t always about the ivory towers and the roses.”

Already receiving widespread attention, Townes was recently named iHeartCountry’s next “On The Verge” artist. The program includes on-air exposure, which has already led to a lift for her debut single “Somebody’s Daughter,” as well as significant digital and social support across iHeartMedia’s network of country radio stations and websites. The program has proven instrumental in the development of such successful and highly credible artists such as Sam Hunt, Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Mitchell Tenpenny and Cam. In celebration of this honor, Townes will perform on the iHeartCountry Festival stage at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX on May 4.

Townes is also one of Amazon Music’s “2019 Artists To Watch,” CMT’s “Next Women of Country,” iHeart Radio’s “Artists To Watch in 2019” and is included in The Bobby Bones Show’s “Class of 2019,” CMT’s “Listen Up” and the inaugural class of “Opry NextStage.” Moreover, Townes continues to garner widespread attention including recent critical praise at NPR Music, Rolling Stone, The Tennessean, Refinery29, Wide Open Country and Sounds Like Nashville.

“I think I played this song 2,000 times in a month after we first wrote it,” said Thomas Rhett. “It makes me want to dance. It makes me want to move. And to me, the song really is a celebration of how awesome my wife is. I know I’ve done that in the past, but I’ve never really done it in an uptempo way.”

Serving as the first taste of what’s to come, Thomas Rhett describes the irresistibly uptempo jam as “the perfect song to take fans into summer” – and also the perfect track to introduce his next project. Featuring a daring electro-Country sound, stunning harmony stacks and a smooth talking vocal hook, Thomas Rhett co-wrote the infectious standout alongside his hit-making father, Rhett Akins as well as Julian Bunetta, John Ryan and J Cash.

“I was really glad we were able to nail this one,” Thomas Rhett added. “My wife is so beautiful, but at the same time she’s inwardly beautiful, she’s funny, she’s kind, she’s the best mom I know … and she’s hilarious. It’s really just about thanking God for the human being He made, and singing it in a fun way.”

Thomas Rhett co-produced “Look What God Gave Her” with Bunetta and Dann Huff, both of whom are longtime collaborators with producer credits on his previous two albums – PLATINUM-certified LIFE CHANGES and TANGLED UP (The Valory Music Co.). More details about Thomas Rhett’s fourth studio album, named after the street in his Tennessee hometown that shaped and influenced much of his life experiences, will be revealed soon, with Country radio’s most-played artist of 2018 hinting that it will find him “getting back to his roots.”

Described by Forbes as a “talented performer, songwriter and all-around star,” Thomas Rhett will wrap up his successful LIFE CHANGES TOUR this spring with a coast-to-coast series of shows in Canada. Then on May 17 in Spokane, WA, the celebrated entertainer will kick off his headlining VERY HOT SUMMER TOUR, visiting 40 stops across the nation with Dustin Lynch, Russell Dickerson and Rhett Akins opening select dates. Nashville Symphony Pairs Mahler’s Das Lied Von Der Erde With Live Recording Of Tobias Picker’s The Encantadas On March 8-9

Nashville, Tenn. (February 28, 2019) — The Nashville Symphony’s Classical Series resumes on March 8-9 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center with a distinctive program of old and new repertoire, as Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero leads the orchestra on Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) and a live recording of American composer Tobias Picker’s The Encantadas.

Guerrero’s affinity for Mahler has made the Austrian composer’s work a regular inclusion in the Nashville Symphony’s annual programming, and Das Lied – featuring alto Michelle DeYoung and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey – exemplifies what makes Mahler one of the most important symphonic composers of all time.

Picker returns to the Schermerhorn following the orchestra’s 2017 performance and recording of his Opera Without Words, which will be paired with The Encantadas on a forthcoming worldwide release on Naxos. Like Das Lied, The Encantadas straddles music, drama and poetry, and Picker himself will narrate the work for the first time during these performances.

Great seats are available starting at $20 (pricing valid while supplies last, additional fees apply), and the Symphony’s Soundcheck program offers $10 tickets to students in K-12, college and grad school.

About the Program

Mahler penned eight symphonies prior to Das Lied, but his sensitivity to the so-called “curse of the Ninth” – a superstition based on the fact that no major composer after Beethoven had completed nine works in the genre before death – led him to affix a descriptive title to the piece rather than numbering it as a symphony.

The work was completed in 1908 and followed a particularly tumultuous year during which the composer lost one of his daughters to scarlet fever, was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition and was forced to resign from his post as director of Vienna’s main opera house due to anti-Semitism.

Widely celebrated for redefining the scope and purpose of a symphony, Mahler broke even further new ground with Das Lied. Unlike the Western worldviews that define his preceding symphonies, the composer instead embraced Eastern influences in crafting the work, which reflected the widespread interest in Asian art at the time. This departure is particularly evident in the text of the piece, which Mahler adapted from seven selections contained in Die chinesische Flöte, an anthology of Chinese poetry that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The resulting hybrid song-symphony explores youth, beauty, sorrow, longing and the mysteries of the eternal, all themes connected to the newfound sense of mortality Mahler was experiencing while composing Das Lied.

Praised by The Wall Street Journal as “our finest composer for the lyric stage,” Picker has garnered critical acclaim for his operas, which continue to be regularly performed around the world, and has made numerous contributions to both the concerto and symphonic genres as well.

Composed in 1983, The Encantadas was originally commissioned, in part, to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Albany Academy, a prep school that Herman Melville briefly attended as a boy. As a source of inspiration, the composer drew on Melville’s The Encantadas, a collection of 10 prose “sketches” depicting the Galápagos Islands, and chose to employ a narrator to read the author’s text over his music.

Melville’s use of alliteration in his book is mirrored throughout The Encantadas, with the title of each of the piece’s six movements starting with the letter D and the music itself beginning on the note of D. The overall shape of the work is presented as the recollections of an old man reflecting on his youthful adventures observing the striking features of the famed islands, and The Encantadas has since gone on to become one of Picker’s most widely performed scores.
