Project Greenlight Digital Studios announced today the winner of their #GetTheGreenLight web series contest is “#Josh” from directors Joshua Jean-Baptiste and Edson Jean. As the winners, the filmmakers will receive $25,000 and a development deal with the studio. Draped in the culturally capricious backdrop of Miami, the film is about a chaste, digitally dependent twenty-something who is forced to coexist with his promiscuous, problematic cousin. After successfully bringing the “Project Greenlight” docuseries back to audiences nationwide, Project Greenlight Digital Studios has now taken it one step further in building their independent filmmaker community in discovering new talent and material in line with their philosophy of if given the opportunity, talent can come from anywhere.
“Project Greenlight Digital Studios was created in part to help find exceptional filmmaking talent by digging deep into communities we couldn’t access before, says Brittany Turner, VP of Digital Video at Adaptive Studios. “#Josh” is a perfect example of this, and we are thrilled to be able to share the high quality content that Joshua and Edson created and to expose it to a wider audience.”
Filmmaker Joshua Jean-Baptiste is a Miami native of Haitian Decent. He graduated from New World School of the Arts with a BFA in Acting. In tandem with his co-Director of the winning film Edson Jean, he has appeared in the HBO selected short film “The Adventures of Edson”. Joshua began his writing career producing shows in local theaters. With the support of the community he has had the opportunity to create and perform in a number of projects aimed at enhancing Miami’s cultural relevance.
Edson Jean graduated from the New World School of the Arts with a B.F.A. in Theatre acting. A Haitian-American, Edson wrote, directed and starred in “The Adventures of Edson Jean” (2013), which aired on HBO. As an actor, he can be seen in Barry Jenkin’s Feature MOONLIGHT, HBO’s “Ballers” and in the Netflix original BLOODLINE. Edson seeks to color the multi-media canvas with the rich yet complex characteristics of the Haitian-American Culture.
Upon learning they were the contests winners, “#Josh” directors Joshua Jean-Baptiste and Edson Jean stated that “This entire #GetTheGreenlight process has been a roller coaster of emotions, or as our fellow Haitians would say…MEZAMI! We are forever grateful that an organization like Project Greenlight is determined to get stories like ours out there. After receiving an unprecedented amount of support from our community, we are honored to share a story set in Miami that isn’t coated in glitz or glamour.”
