Perfect Weather Shines on Musicians Corner

Matthew Perryman Jones entertains music lovers of all ages

The rain from the early morning had gone, and by 3pm the day was sunny with the temperature in the low 70’s. Following a record-breaking week last Saturday, Musicians Corner was back in Centennial Park for performances from the Allen Thompson Band, Goodbye June, Marie Hines, Matthew Perryman Jones and more.

The music seemed to reflect the feel-good day. Allen Thompson and his band kicked things off with their acoustically-driven, folky, rock sound reminiscent of the Allman Brothers.  Immediately after their stellar set, the Lightning 100 Acoustic Stage welcomed the soft and sweet sounds of Kate Tucker.

As the crowd started filling in the crevices of the Centennial Park lawn, Goodbye June picked things up. The band had the amazing ability to delight patrons young and old at “Nashville’s weekly lawn party;” and yet one got the sense that at another venue, the rock band would surely have a mosh of people down front throwing their hands in the air.

Following the great singer/songwriter Jeff Blaney on the Acoustic stage was the incredibly talented Marie Hines. Marie’s music has been featured on television, showcased all over the US, and the video for her song “Perfect Kiss” is currently in regular rotation on CMT Pure. Her music is always divine, especially when she is alone behind the piano, yet this performance had the added bonus of a string quartet to back her up.

The final Acoustic Stage performance of the day was award-winning Arkansas singer/songwriter Effron White. His raspy, authentic sound was a great way to lead into a Musicians Corner favorite: Matthew Perryman Jones. Executive Director John Tumminiello, using no notes, introduced MPJ as follows: “In a city filled with wonderful voices, this performer is my absolute favorite…”

And the atmosphere of the park seemed to mirror those sentiments, as Matthew played to a delighted crowd with no less than a dozen children running around in front of the stage. He included several of his biggest hits as well as some great new material, and even brought Kate Tucker back on stage to sing backup on a couple songs.

Next week is a special Americana Music Festival event featuring Sam Bush, Hoots And Hellmouth, Charlie Faye, Ella Mae Bowen And Carolina Story. The Mobile Food Court opens at 11am, the Beer & Wine Garden features a Happy Hour from 2-3pm, and the pre-show acoustic music begins at 2:30!
