10 Questions With Yellowire

YellowireI had the pleasure of hearing for the first time, Yellowire, at BMI’s “Jingle Ball” showcase on Monday, December 5th. Yellowire is an incredibly talented indy rock band that came all the way from England. All that I know is there was just something magical when they took the stage that made me want to learn more about them! I think if I had to describe their music, I would say a cross between U2, Beck, and Robbie Williams.  Definitely worth a listen!

Yellowire is comprised of Ol Beach (vocals, piano, guitar), Jim Board (guitar), Billy Brimblecom/Adrian Meehan (drums), Greg Lafollette/Simone Butler (bass).

Want to learn more about Yellowire??? Sure you do! Be sure to check out their video and interview below.  Also, find them at their website: www.yellowire.co.uk

Interview With Lead Singer, Ol Beach:

1) Where is your band based out of?

“The band is based mainly out of London.
We all come from different parts of the UK and London is the meeting point now.”

2) How did you come up with the name of your band?

“I was on tour in South Africa supporting Robbie Williams. I met a masseuse with spiritual connections. She told me that was my bands name. I didn’t want to argue.”

3) When was your band formed and how did you get together?

We’ve been playing together for a few years now. It’s a very organic process and such a small world of musicians here the line up has been constantly evolving. Everything keeps growing and moving forward. The last dates we had in the US were with a drummer and bass player from Nashville who we met through people. We had one rehearsal and it felt like we’d been playing together for years. I’d be very excited to work with those guys again.”

4) How would you describe your music?

“Indy rock.”

5) Musical influences?

“Influences that go all the way back. The great early players had so much going on. They are very inspiring. We’re just listening and learning all the time. I saw Rachael Yamagata play the other day, she taught me some beautiful lessons.”

6) Do you write your own music?

“Yes.”

7) Any plans for touring?

“Hopefully we’re going to be touring again in the US around March 2012. But we’re looking at some recording in Nashville before then so we might try and have one or two gigs during that time as well. In a perfect world.”

8) New music in the works? When being released and where can people buy?

“We are releasing our album in the US next year. You can pre download it from our website and also i-tunes in the US.”

9) Anything exciting in the works for you coming up in the near future?

“We had a great time doing these dates [Jingle Ball] and hopefully after talking with everybody there will be more to come.”

10) Message to your fans?

“Spread the word and have a great Christmas!”

Album Review: The Breedings’ ‘Laughing At Luck’

The BreedingsI have been meaning to write an album review for this project for a while now.  I held off because I was unsure if I would feature independent artists on this site or only signed/known artists like I started out with.  Well, I decided that I want this site to be inclusive of both and all genres because there is great music out there that can be discovered.  I don’t want to place any limits on myself or this site.

The Breedings are a brother and sister duo based out of Nashville, TN.

Originally hailing from Lexington, KY, the duo sings original material penned by singer/songwriter Willie Breeding, who released two solo albums while living in Brooklyn, NY and touring nationally.  Big sister Erin, who was living as an accountant in Boston and singing occasional back-up for her brother, stepped up to become the lead singer in 2008.  Brought together by their love of ‘70s country music, the pair emerged in 2011 with a surprisingly rock’n’roll album.

This 9 track, fully-produced album by The Breedings entitled ‘Laughing At Luck’ is a refreshing mix of classic rock and folk.  Just a cool vibe all the way through.  Think Fleetwood Mac meets Bob Dylan and you’ve got The Breedings in this project.

My favorites on the album are “When It All Comes Down” a slightly dark, melancholy, mid-tempo song about love , “I Know I Say” –another mid-tempo song about love lost, “Turn” was a powerful and touching ballad, and “Everything You Wanted” a mid-tempo, dark, and almost a dreamy feel to it–this one just flows and I liked it.  Great way to end the album.  The one song that I didn’t really enjoy was the title track of “Laughing At Luck”.  It was just a little too melancholy for me and I just didn’t like the arrangement.

Overall, I enjoyed this album.  I thought the production could’ve been a little better on it, but maybe that added a little to the charm of it.  It created this whole throwback vibe to the album for me where this might’ve been created in the 70s and printed on vinyl.  It’s a timeless creation that is cool and fresh with deep, thought-provoking lyrics.

Check them out at their website: www.thebreedingsmusic.com to find out more about them and you can find their music on iTunes!

Rated 4 out of 5 stars.

Margaret Durante’s Favorite Christmas Memory

Margaret Durante

“I remember when I got to sing “The Christmas Song” in my first grade Christmas recital and loving being on the stage and singing for friends and family.  I still smile every time I hear that song during the holidays.” —  Margaret Durante

Margaret with Santa

About Margaret Durante

With the release of her four-song digital-only “Maybe Tonight EP,” much of the music world is getting its first glimpse of one of country music’s most exciting young voices, Margaret Durante. The title track from the EP is a contagiously upbeat look at new love at its flirty and romantic best. It is also her new single and a great introduction to Margaret, whose world-class pipes and dynamic stage presence have been wowing audiences since she was a young girl. The EP, culled from her forthcoming debut album, is a compelling collection of songs that showcase the sheer talent Margaret brings to the table as a vocalist and as a songwriter who can hold her own in a room with Nashville’s best. From the title-track and the moody and melodic “Paper Chains”, both of which were co-written by Margaret, to the pain-drenched “Better” and “Whiskey And A Gun,” a jaw-droppingly tough look at revenge from one woman’s point of view, it’s a collection that highlights the power and intimacy of her vocal performances and the connection she has always made with her audiences.

“I really want listeners to feel like they are my confidantes,” Margaret says. “I want them to feel like they have someone to commiserate and celebrate with when they hear my songs.”

The project is for Margaret the culmination of three years of work honing the crafts she has nurtured since childhood. Collaborating with a group that includes co-writer and co-producer Stephony Smith and legendary producer/label head James Stroud made the excitement of making her first record all the more thrilling.

“I knew I had material that I loved and believed in and I couldn’t wait to share those songs with other people,” says Margaret. “Then, when James and Stephony wanted to be involved to the extent they were, that sweetened the deal even more.”

The digital-only EP, on Stroud’s new Emrose Records imprint, caps a journey that began in a household steeped in music, from Frank Sinatra to Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter. At 16, Margaret began touring with a band, gaining invaluable performing experience up and down the East Coast. She enrolled at Clemson, but soon left the school and friends she loved to pursue her dreams in the town she knew was the place to truly sharpen her skills — Nashville. There she met publishing and A&R executive Laura Stroud, who recognized Margaret’s raw talents as a singer, writer and performer. The two soon began working together, leading to introductions to the city’s great songwriters and guiding her towards a record deal.

Though Margaret’s heart and soul are firmly rooted in country music, she also recently enjoyed national exposure when she provided lead vocals for her friends at Hot Rush Productions on two songs featured in recent episodes of Disney’s hot new tween series, Shake It Up. One of the songs, “Watch Me,” was used as the theme song during the season’s premiere episode, seen by 6.2 million viewers as well as another half million from fan-posted videos on YouTube. Margaret was also recently hailed by Nashville Lifestyles Magazine as the “Fresh Face to Watch in 2011.”

As she continues work on her debut album, scheduled for fall release, Margaret is living out the dream that took root in the music-infused home she grew up in.

“There’s such a power to music,” she says. “It’s one of the reasons I live in this town. Although the level of brilliance and commitment that exists here can be almost intimidating, I just let it inspire me. It makes my appreciation for the magic of music evolve and grow every day.”

And in Margaret Durante, country audiences everywhere are about to find their own connection to that magic.

Album Review: Joe Nichols ‘It’s All Good’–Indeed, Yes, It Is

Joe NicholsTraditionalist Joe Nichols has got to have one of the most pure country voices out there in the country genre today.  I could sit here and listen to him sing all day.  He’s definitely one of the best male vocalists out there.  Love that deep baritone voice of his!

Album Review: Julie Roberts ‘Who Needs Mistletoe’

Julie RobertsI think I’m starting the Christmas holidays a little early this year, but who cares! This new Christmas album from Julie Roberts ‘Who Needs Mistletoe’ is sure to put anyone in the Christmas spirit, especially those who enjoy traditional country music.  Roberts has that distinctive voice and style that sets her apart that few really have and when I listened to this new album, I was reminded of musical legends like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette. Album Review: Toby Keith ‘Clancy’s Tavern’, Contest

Toby KeithI’ve always enjoyed Toby Keith‘s music.  He’s always been able to make great country music that appeals to the masses and never seems to take himself too seriously–two attributes that I like about both music and people alike! He always likes to incorporate a little humor into his music like one of his biggest hits “Let’s Talk About Me” that made me an instant Toby Keith fan from the moment I saw the video.

Album Review: Hunter Hayes Releasing Debut Self-Titled Album October 11th

HunterI had the pleasure of meeting 20-year-old Hunter Hayes and discussing his music back in June of this year.  What struck me the most about Hunter is how humble and grounded he is.  I foresee and hope for nothing but great things ahead for him.  Hunter is a true musical prodigy on the verge of stardom! He was already a skilled musician at the age of only 4 when he made his appearance on stage with Hank Williams Jr. in front of a large audience playing an accordion and singing “Jambalaya“.   So, I guess it’s no real surprise that Hunter produced and played every instrument on his debut album.  Just extremely impressive! How many people can say all of that? Makes everybody else look like they need to go find a href=’http://www.weldingtraining.org’>day job in welding training.

Song Review: Burns & Poe “I Need A Job”

“I Need A Job” is the new single from Burns & Poe written by Keith Burns and John Ritter.  This is a fun, straight-forward, tongue-in-cheek, uptempo song perfect for a little line-dancing if you feel so inclined.  It makes you want to get up and dance when you hear it.  There’s no real deep meaning behind the lyrics with the exception of being completely relatable by a lot of people in the country who are out of a job and looking for work.  It’s not meant to be a downer-type, serious song, just simply a fun one meant to take your worries away and be danced to.  I think traditional country lovers and fans of Trick Pony would equally love this song.
