Nashville Symphony Opens 2018/19 Season With Sculpture Unveiling And Bernstein Centennial Celebration

Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony return from their summer hiatus on Saturday, September 8, to kick off the 2018/19 season with the Bernstein Centennial Opening Night, a one-night-only performance that will honor one of America’s most influential and revered composers. The concert is part of a nationwide, yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

As part of the opening festivities, a bronze bust of Guerrero by California artist Alicia Ponzio will be unveiled in the Schermerhorn’s Main Lobby prior to the performance. The pre-concert sculpture unveiling promises to add a unique element to the Nashville Symphony’s opening night, introducing another distinctive feature to the Schermerhorn’s architecture and design. The bust was commissioned by Nashville Symphony patrons Dr. Zeljko and Tanya Radic specifically for the Schermerhorn.

Based in San Francisco, sculptor Alicia Ponzio is represented by Haynes Galleries, located in Franklin, Tennessee. She studied and later taught at Italy’s prestigious Florence Academy of Art. Her work has received recognition and honors from the Art Renewal Center, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, The Portrait Society of America, The California Art Club and The National Sculpture Society, the last of which awarded Ponzio the Alex J. Ettl Grant in 2016.

Creating the sculpture of Guerrero, the Symphony’s music director since 2009, proved to be a uniquely fulfilling experience for Ponzio.

“Meeting Giancarlo was an important part of my process in creating this bust,” the artist explains. “I try to get a sense of the individual I’m portraying aside from their public persona. He has a dramatic and powerful presence that I observed and heard during his performances; but at the same time he’s warm and engaging in conversation. I wanted the bust to give the viewers a sense of his intensity, his passion for music and incredible talents, while also describing him as an individual of great humanity.”

Guerrero and his wife Shirley will be on hand for the unveiling and will be joined by Ponzio, Zeljko and Tanya Radic, and Haynes Galleries owner Gary R. Haynes. The event will be open to all patrons with tickets to the Bernstein Centennial Opening Night. Full details of the pre-concert unveiling will be announced to the press in early September, and members of the media are invited to attend. More information about Alicia Ponzio is available on her website.

Symphony Celebrates “Most Important Musical Figure of the 20th Century”

Following the sculpture unveiling, Guerrero and the Nashville Symphony will perform some of Leonard Bernstein’s most popular and enduring works.

Bernstein, whom Guerrero considers “the most important musical figure of the 20th century,” continues to make a profound impact on the world of music nearly 30 years after his death. The opening-night program pulls together selections from his wide musical spectrum, which was influenced by his passions for the Broadway stage, contemporary political and social issues, his Jewish heritage and the classical music tradition he inherited and later elevated for a rapidly changing American audience.

The evening will open with Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, Bernstein’s first full-scale musical comedy, and the masterful Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront, the 1954 film starring Marlon Brando. Following intermission, Guerrero will lead the orchestra in Bernstein’s First Symphony, subtitled “Jeremiah” after the Old Testament prophet, before closing with Symphonic Dances, which weaves together nine separate musical episodes from West Side Story. Full program notes for the Bernstein Centennial Opening Night are available here.

Tickets for the Bernstein Centennial Opening Night are still available and can be purchased at NashvilleSymphony.org/Bernstein, via phone at 615.687.6400 or at the Schermerhorn Box Office, One Symphony Place in downtown Nashville.

The GRAMMY® Award-winning Nashville Symphony has earned an international reputation for its innovative programming and its commitment to performing, recording and commissioning works by America’s leading composers. The Nashville Symphony has released 29 recordings on Naxos, which have received 24 GRAMMY® nominations and 13 GRAMMY® Awards, making it one of the most active recording orchestras in the country. The orchestra has also released recordings on Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and New West Records, among other labels. With more than 140 performances annually, the orchestra offers a broad range of classical, pops and jazz, and children’s concerts, while its extensive education and community engagement programs reach 60,000 children and adults each year.

Music For Mike Benefit Concert Set For War Memorial Auditorium On Sept. 25

The 1990s flagship staff of Arista Nashville, affectionately known as “The Refugees,” are banding together with Sea Gayle Music on Sept. 25 to host Music for Mike, a concert in support of one of their own, Mike Owens, who needs a kidney transplant.

Tickets for the benefit concert are on sale now at WMArocks.com, by phone at 615-782-4030, and in person at the TPAC Box Office, 505 Deaderick St., in downtown Nashville.

The Music for Mike performers include recent Songwriter’s Hall of Fame inductee Alan Jackson, superstar duo Brooks & Dunn, and critically acclaimed entertainer Brad Paisley, along with BlackHawk, Diamond Rio, Lee Roy Parnell, Pam Tillis, Phil Vassar, and Steve Wariner.

In total, these artists have sold over 150 million albums and racked up 99 number 1 hits. Backing this stellar line-up is veteran touring band, Sixwire.

95.5 Nash Icon is partnering with Music for Mike, and morning show host Marty McFly will serve as M.C. Charlie Cook, Cumulus Vice President Country Format, acknowledges the artist line up as a perfect fit for the station but explains their reasons for supporting the show run much deeper.

“Every once in a while, Nashville can come together for not only a good cause but in this case one that means something to all of us personally,” Cook said. “95.5 Nash Icon is proud to play a role in helping Mike and his family.”

Owens is part of the inaugural Arista Nashville promotion team who launched the careers of superstar acts Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn, among others. Following his time at Arista, he joined Universal South as Vice President of Artist & Repertoire and most recently served as Vice President of Creative with Sea Gayle Music. In December of 2014, Owens was diagnosed with kidney failure and has since required daily dialysis treatments while awaiting a donor kidney. The side effects of Mike’s disease led to other medical issues, including the amputation of a portion of his right leg last year, leaving Mike unable to work with medical bills piling up.

Proceeds from the benefit will go directly to the Mike Owens Family Trust to help defray a portion of his medical expenses. To donate to Mike in other ways, visit Mike’s Go Fund Me page, and visit https://www.kidney.org/transplantation/livingdonors for more information on how to become a kidney donor.

Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine Are “Better Off” With New Single, Out Today

Courtesy of Big Machine Records

PLATINUM-certified Canadian breakout duo ELIJAH WOODS x JAMIE FINE are thrilled to reveal their second single “Better Off” (Big Machine Records), available now: https://ewxjf.lnk.to/BetterOffPR. The powerful new track comes hot on the heels of their chart-topping debut single “Ain’t Easy,” which has garnered over 16 million streams to date and was certified PLATINUM earlier this summer as it dominated airwaves nationwide. This Sunday (8/26), EWxJF will kick off an epic red carpet street party at the 2018 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards with their first exclusive live award show performance of “Ain’t Easy” and will also vie for Best New Canadian Artist.

EWxJF have been hard at work touring and recording new music since being named the season one/week two winners of CTV’s new hit series The Launch.  Last week, the duo performed at the iHeartRadio Music Summit in NYC, delivering a performance filled with integrity and candor that received a roaring standing ovation from the audience.

Comprised of instrumentalist/composer Elijah Woods, “churning out endlessly inventive hooks” (Ottawa Citizen), and lyricist/vocalist Jamie Fine, whose “vocal delivery bores the influence of artists from Alanis to Adele” (Ottawa Citizen), EWxJF is a delicate marriage of exploratory musical styles and masterful emotional play. Purposefully breaching the boundaries of rhythmic Pop music by embracing and balancing their penchant for stylized pop and Hip-Hop culture, EWxJF continuously create waves rather than ride them – striving to remain true to a vision that deviates from the mainstream, bringing full-sized moments and their kinetic energy to the forefront, one genre-defying hit at a time.

Ready to ascend to the next level of super stardom like fellow Canadian global stars Drake, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, Jessie Reyez and more – the duo continues to pull away from the pack as one of the most successful breakthrough musical acts of the year, as evidenced by the PLATINUM sales success of “Ain’t Easy”, which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes All Genres chart and hit No. 1 on the Top 200 most Shazamed songs in Canada. The Top 5 hit at Pop and HOT AC Radio, was co-written and produced by Ryan Tedder (One Republic) and continues to grow in popularity amongst a worldwide audience. The track was recently serviced to radio in the U.S. and is already picking up adds.

Keith Urban Debuts Official Music Video For Latest Single “Never Comin Down”

Buy / Stream Link For Song: http://smarturl.it/NeverCominDown

Four-time GRAMMY ® Award winner Keith Urban debuts the brand-new music video for his latest single GRAFFITI U’s “Never Comin Down,” which follows his 24th #1 song “Coming Home.”  “Never Comin Down,” (Urban, Josh Kerr, James Abrahart, Shy Carter) says Urban, “captures the energy and spirit of being at a show – lost in the music, along with everyone else that’s there, whether you know them or not.  That’s the feeling that I wanted to capture in the video.”

The result produced a wildly creative narrative that intentionally accentuates inclusivity through dance.  Urban’s collaborator, director Carter Smith says, “In casting, we took the people that were happiest to be themselves – whatever that was.  We brought in voguers, break dancers, hip-hop dancers – line dancers – everybody’s dancing together for this one song, on this one night.”

The video opens with a nervous young man approaching a bar. As he makes his way inside, he’s slowly consumed by the feeling in the room, everyone dancing, expressing themselves in their own way, lost in the music.  By the end of the video, he’s not only out on the dance floor, but showing them all how to line dance.

Urban is currently in the midst of his 62-city “GRAFFITI U WORLD TOUR 2018” – with his guitar – and is scheduled to perform in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena this Friday.

Brett Young Announced As The Face Of William Rast

William Rast announced today the launch of its Fall 2018 men’s and women’s collection at several national retailers including Macy’s, Dillard’s, Belk, Lord & Taylor and Amazon, unveiling a print campaign featuring Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards New Male Vocalist of the Year Brett Young. Young will serve as the new Brand Ambassador alongside supermodel Stella Maxwell, whose face has graced the covers of magazines ranging from Vogue to Harper’s Bazaar. Shot by acclaimed fashion photographer Boo George and styled by Deborah Watson, the campaign embraces the collection’s Americana styled clothing.

Chosen as the fresh faces of the new American denim culture, Young and Maxwell bridge the worlds of high fashion and music for this campaign. Imagery shows Young fittingly embodies the modern interpretation of Americana biker culture and casual fit and form of the men’s line, while Maxwell walks the line between accessible tomboy and sensual woman that mirrors the inspiration for the women’s wear collection.

“William Rast is at the intersection of music and fashion. We knew that Brett Young and Stella Maxwell could capture that intersection beautifully and deliver incredible creative,” said Karen Castellano, Fashion Division President at Sequential Brands Group.

“I’m so excited to work with both William Rast and Stella for this campaign,” Young said. “This is the first time I’ve done anything like this, and it’s been an absolutely blast.”

The national advertising campaign featuring Young and Maxwell will launch in select traditional and digital media outlets and in select retail stores across the country.

The Fall 2018 campaign captures this essence in a relaxed, effortless, timeless way while clearly showcasing the new silhouettes, essential for the upcoming Fall season.

Delivering four consecutive PLATINUM-selling hits from his self-titled PLATINUM-certified album on BMLG Records, Young became one of Country music’s new class of hitmakers. The success of his songs has been amplified by an extraordinary response to Young’s music videos with “In Case You Didn’t Know” surpassing 197 million views and “Mercy” spending six consecutive weeks atop Vevo’s Top Country chart. Named as the only Country act on Billboard’s Top 10 New Artists, Young continues to impress the genre and beyond with nominations from the ACM, Billboard, Teen Choice, CMT and CMA Awards. Along with the industry successes, his relationship with fans found Young selling out every single stop on his debut headlining CALIVILLE TOUR and earning new followers on the road with Thomas Rhett’s LIFE CHANGES TOUR 2018.
