Nashville Ballet And League Of Women Voters Premiere New Work

Inspired by Tennessee’s vital role in the ratification of the 19th Amendment, Nashville Ballet will debut Gina Patterson’s 72 Steps at Harpeth Hall School’s Frances Bond Davis Theatre on Saturday, November 10 at 2 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public.

Commissioned by the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Nashville and their Perfect 36 Supporters, 72 Steps explores themes of basic human rights, civic responsibility and the ongoing battle for a more equitable society through the lens of the suffrage movement.

“We always knew the League of Women Voters should be involved in telling the story of the passage of the 19th Amendment. After all, it was our own Carrie Chapman Catt who created the League in February of 1920 before traveling to Nashville in July to secure the vote,” LWV of Nashville project co-chairs Cindee Gold and Debby Gould explained. “After careful consideration, we chose ballet. For many of us, as young girls, ballet was one of the few acceptable outlets we had to express our athleticism and creativity. Dancers are beautiful, but it is their strength that is crucial to their success, as so it is with all women.”

“Given that Tennessee was the 36th and final vote needed for the ratification of the 19th Amendment, the League of Women Voters [of Nashville] felt it was important to mark the upcoming 100th anniversary in a special way,” LWV of Nashville project co-chairs Cindee Gold and Debby Gould explained. “Our choice to commission a ballet was very intentional. Historically, our society has discouraged girls from participating in sports; girls were meant to be delicate, but in dance we could be strong – we could flex our muscles and assert ourselves with a confidence not allowed outside the studio.”

Complementary to state curriculum for middle school history classes, Nashville Ballet’s second company, NB2, will transport classrooms and audiences to the early 1900s as the fight for women’s rights is heating up. Inspired by history, Patterson’s work is a contemporary retelling of the slow flame of the suffrage movement as friends and families grapple with the terms of one of the most divisive issues of the time building to a fiery denouement in the days surrounding the Tennessee legislature’s history making vote and the famed letter said to have persuaded young House Representative Harry Burn to support the proposed amendment.

Depicting a fight that began with the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 and spanned over 72 years, Patterson’s work draws parallels from the past to present in an effort to transcend time. During the creative process, Patterson called NB2 artists to reflect on the civic issues that concern them in modern society. They followed this by writing letters similar to that which Rep. Burns’s mother wrote convincing him to cast that momentous vote; Patterson used these letters and conversations to shape the ballet’s narrative.

72 Steps endeavors to engage young people on the topic of inequality and illuminate the long and continuing march towards parity. It challenges audiences to contemplate their own beliefs around women’s voting rights and how this extends to broader conversations of equality, whether relating to gender or other discriminations in the name of power and control,” Patterson said. “I hope this ballet will inspire viewers to think about their rights when the time comes to go to the polls, and how they might use their own voices to make a difference in everyday life.”

A feminine tour de force, 72 Steps celebrates Nashville’s female creatives. Local composer Jordan Hamlin wrote the galvanizing score that drives Patterson’s narrative and designer Jocelyn Melechinsky created the work’s striking costumes merging historical influence with allusions to the future.

After its premiere, 72 Steps will enter a limited pilot engagement in Metro Nashville Public Schools as part of Nashville Ballet’s Community Engagement repertoire. This special premiere is free and open to the public; limited seating is available. To learn more about 72 Steps, or reserve seating, visit www.nashvilleballet.com/72-steps.

Delta Rae Empowers Fans To Get Their “Hands Dirty”

Delta Rae has never shied away from speaking their minds, especially on tough subjects. Holljes siblings Brittany, Ian and Eric were raised to educate themselves on issues affecting their community, watching their feminist mother call for change in spite of public berating. The lead-by-example message stuck with them and bandmates Liz Hopkins, Grant Emerson and Mike McKee as a cornerstone of their group – to make music that matters on whatever platforms available. As political tensions rise, the #MeToo Movement unfolds and new generations head to the polls, the six-piece knows the importance of getting your “Hands Dirty.” Brittany (lead vocals) and Ian (vocals, guitar) penned the song to implore fellow “persistent resistors” to plead for social equality and activism. Get “Hands Dirty” now at digital retailers: https://DeltaRae.lnk.to/HandsDirtyPR.

Sharing the genesis of “Hands Dirty” with fans through a personal essay, Brittany explains how through dark times she found strength. She hopes these words will ultimately encourage people to get out and vote for the midterm elections next month, empowering marginalized groups.

I have seen the other side of the mountain
Where every queen will be afforded her throne
And I will stand beside my sisters
And all persistent resistors
They’ll say I knew it would come true
And I’ll say darling, Me Too.

I was sexually assaulted when I was 13. I won’t go into the details, even though I remember them and the trauma vividly. My adrenaline kicks in, even now, thinking about it 16 years later. When it happened, the first person I confided in was my friend Liz, who was like a big sister to me. She told me to tell my brothers, Ian and Eric, and they urged me to tell our parents. I did. A year later I dropped out of high school. I went to community college and graduated from UC Berkeley before eventually moving to North Carolina, into a big house in the middle of the woods with Ian, Eric, and Liz, and finding our rhythm section, Mike and Grant. That fall we started Delta Rae, and my whole life changed.

But, I can’t say I never looked back. I will never be able to forget the assault. My life changed then too. I was lucky to be believed and to have the support of my close friends and family. And I, like most women who say “Me Too,” didn’t quit on myself after the first assault or after countless other times experiencing misogyny, harassment or violence since. We just keep working.

My brother and I wrote “Hands Dirty” because women in America are doing just that every day – tirelessly working at our jobs, pursuing our education, running for office in record numbers in the 2018 election. We create beautiful art, raise children, start businesses, teach young people, save lives. We keep pursuing our goals as though nothing is wrong, but something IS deeply wrong.

One in three women have been the victim of sexual violence.* On top of what we are trying to accomplish as individuals, we are still fighting collectively to be seen as human beings. As equals. Women are not victims, but we have been victimized. But the even more complex truth is that it’s not just women who are being abused. One in six men also experience sexual violence, and the likelihood grows based on your economic status, race, sexual orientation, disabilities or whether you’re an immigrant.*

The real fight is not between genders. The fight is against institutional corruption that reinforces toxic masculinity and ignores or excuses sexual violence. That’s why we need to all rally together as a united front to dismantle a broken system and disrupt the status quo of government, corporate industry and popular culture.

Delta Rae is a band fronted by two strong women, and backed by four feminist men. There are people who look to Liz and me as role models, but there are days when I don’t feel strong enough to be a role model for anyone, when the shame and rage of my experiences as a woman threaten to overwhelm me. The show must go on, and it does thanks to our fierce fans, who give me back a belief in myself. But most women don’t get applause at the end of the day.

We are seldom told we’re powerful. In fact, we are often told the opposite from the time we are very young. Now more than ever – thanks in large part to the #MeToo movement – brave women have been raising their voices, creating new awareness of the old, ugly reality that many of us have known since childhood. We wrote “Hands Dirty” because we refuse to give up on the inevitable, equitable future. We believe that women will rise and claim our place as leaders in this world because the future is up to us – as women and for anyone who believes in equality. Women are not a monolith, we have diverse beliefs, but we all will benefit when women are in positions of power — representing our diversity of experiences and inspiring the next generation to further the progress.

This November, we have the opportunity to get an historic number of women elected. Let’s do it by getting an historic number of women voting in the midterms and beyond. Volunteer with Rock The Vote, HeadCount, Emily’s List or one of the many great organizations helping us to all raise our voices. Speak up about the causes that matter to you. Inspire your friends, coworkers, classmates, family and neighbors to vote.

If you’re ready for a change… Me Too. Let’s get our HANDS DIRTY.

OZY Media Announces New Primetime Television Series, ‘Take On America’

OZY Media, the daily information source for important stories told nowhere else, today announced their fourth primetime television show, Take On America, a groundbreaking series of televised town halls confronting the country’s most pressing issues through the lens of race. The series premieres on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 8PM ET/ 7PM CT on PBS Stations, Facebook, YouTube and OZY.com.

There will also be a special Take On America podcast, with editorial highlights and commentary from each episode available in iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

Hosted by Emmy-award winning journalist and OZY co-founder and CEO Carlos Watson, Take On America will uncover the different perspectives among groups who are often stereotyped for voting as a bloc, and reveal surprising views and diverse values.

Featuring a panel of celebrities and political leaders, each town hall will tackle critical political and cultural questions in front of a live studio audience comprised of one hundred people of each featured demographic group. The first four episodes will feature the voices of:

Each episode will provide an inside look into the daily conversations these communities are really having, helping to forge paths for progressive dialogue and forward movement as one nation in the lead-up to the midterms and beyond. The series aims to foster dialogue that unites American people, and fosters a greater insight and understanding at a critical time.

“I feel passionately that we are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history,” said series host Carlos Watson. “We are living in one of the most racially charged eras since the Civil Rights Movement, and the world is simultaneously more connected technologically, and disconnected interpersonally, than it’s ever been before. We hope that Take on America will create a forum for substantive dialogue and ultimately inform and inspire action.”

The announcement of OZY’s fourth primetime television show, Take On America comes on the heels of a number of recent major announcements for the company. In August, OZY announced the creation of an in-house production studio, OZY Studios, doubling the size of their video team in order to drive the company’s rapid growth in TV and digital video series. OZY also recently signed with premiere Hollywood talent agency, United Talent Agency (UTA) to accelerate the company’s growth in television, podcasts, and live events.

Take On America is supported by the Charles Koch Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

“Conversations that surface our differences take courage,” said Charles Koch Foundation director of free expression Sarah Ruger. “We’re proud to support OZY’s national townhall series as it invites communities to join the forward-looking dialogue that’s built on respect for each other’s dignity, instead of divisiveness.” The Foundation supports partners who are working to understand the roots of intolerance and finding creative ways to increase engagement across divides in areas such as criminal justice reform, free expression, foreign policy, economic opportunity and innovation.

Before heading to Australia for more international promotion, Underwood was joined by family and friends for her star ceremony and induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as well as, a performance at the iHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas, NV.

In Australia, she performed in front of a live audience on The AFL Footy Show’s Grand Final Edition from Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena and headlined the iconic Deni Ute Muster’s 20th Anniversary Festival in Deniliquin, New South Wales, for a crowd of nearly 18,000 people.  In addition to appearances on ABC News Breakfast and her third on Australia’s nightly news and entertainment program, The Project, she performed an outdoor concert live from Melbourne’s Federation Square on Sunrise, the No. 1 breakfast show, as part of their annual Grand Final Brekky Party, leading up to the country-wide AFL Grand Final weekend celebrations.

The UK’s Music Week says, “While it is with a reasonable degree of certainty that artists will typically herald their latest album as their most personal to date, in Underwood’s case that claim has authenticity…Underwood’s career stands as an exemplar of how to do everything right.”

In the coming weeks Underwood will have several performances including the 2018 American Music Awards airing on ABC, where she is also nominated as Favorite Female Artist – Country. Her performance on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! will air on October 9 following the AMA broadcast.  She is also being honored and will perform live at the 2018 CMT Artists of the Year special on October 17, which is dedicated to the women of Country music – past, present and future.  The following week she will join with the Grand Ole Opry in the fight against breast cancer on October 26, performing two shows for the special 10th Annual “Opry Goes Pink.”  On November 14, she and Brad Paisley will co-host the CMA Awards for the 11th consecutive year.  Later that week, she will be inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.

Cry Pretty debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Album Charts, making Underwood the only woman in history to land four country albums at the top of the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, as well as the first female country act to top the Billboard Artist 100 Chart. The critically-acclaimed album is the best-selling Country album debut of 2018. Cry Pretty’s debut week also marks the most first week streams by any female in Country music. This is Underwood’s seventh consecutive album to debut at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, representing all of her first seven albums including her Greatest Hits: Decade #1.

The album is Underwood’s first release on Capitol Records Nashville and her first time co-producing alongside David Garcia.  She co-wrote nine of the songs on the album including her current single, “Love Wins,” with David Garcia and Brett James.  She recently released the official music video for “Love Wins,” which was directed by Shane Drake.
