NASHVILLE, TN – (October 26, 2022) – Today, CMT and Sandbox Productions announced country music legend Wynonna Judd will headline a history-making concert event with “THE JUDDS: LOVE IS ALIVE – THE FINAL CONCERT” on Thursday, November 3rd at the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), recreating The Judds 1991 Farewell Tour for a special televised event airing in March 2023 on CMT. Wynonna’s current tourmates Ashley McBryde, Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town and Martina McBride are also slated to join, sharing the same bill for the first time ever; additional special guests to be announced. Tickets are on-sale today at 2:00PM CT here, with a portion of proceeds benefiting NAMI Tennessee.

The Judds homecoming to MTSU will mark the largest concert to take place at the iconic Murphy Center since Wynonna and her mother, Naomi Judd, had their final show together on The Judds Farewell Tour  over three decades ago. The made-for-television event also serves as the kick off to the venue’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration.

The news of “THE JUDDS: LOVE IS ALIVE – THE FINAL CONCERT” was revealed earlier today by Wynonna herself during an intimate press luncheon at Fox & Locke restaurant in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, alongside CMT and Sandbox Productions event producers and representatives from MTSU.

“Stepping onstage at the Murphy Center for the first time since Dec. 4th, 1991 will be so surreal for me. It was an emotional night over 30 years ago and will be an emotional night, for different reasons, now,” said Wynonna. “I can’t wait to lean into the nostalgia with the artists who have made this tour so special, and recreate one of the most iconic nights in Judd “Herstory!””

“It’s serendipitous magic on so many levels to be able to capture Wynonna’s return to the Murphy Center, almost exactly 31 years to the date. And it’s especially meaningful as an MTSU alum to produce such a landmark event, working hand in hand with the university’s faculty and staff to have their students actively participate in the production in its entirety,” said Margaret Comeaux, Executive Producer & SVP of Production, Music & Events, CMT. “We are also extremely excited to collaborate once again with our amazing partners at Sandbox to present a true Judds event spectacular that has been decades in the making, and continue to tell the next chapter in Wynonna’s story.”

“I remember when I was 15 years old, watching The Judds 1991 Farewell Concert on repeat when it first came out on Pay-Per-View. This is such an incredible, full circle moment to reproduce that same iconic special with Wy, and having her joined by all the powerhouse women she has brought with her on tour,” said Sandbox Productions’ Jason Owen, Executive Producer. “I’m so excited for everyone to watch – and for the incredible legacy of The Judds to live on forever.”

“What is most compelling about the Judds’ music is that it captures the love between two women. The Murphy Center event will allow us all to celebrate that love. After all, it was love that built a bridge between the Judds and their audience,” added Beverly Keel, Dean of the College of Media and Entertainment, MTSU. “It is love that connects the family of country music females and strengthens them as they work to make their voices heard.”

As announced earlier this week, The Judds: The Final Tour will continue for a second run into 2023, following its initial 11 date area tour with Ashley McBryde, Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, Martina McBride all set to return for select dates, with more special guests to be announced. For more information, visit TheJudds.com.

“THE JUDDS: LOVE IS ALIVE – THE FINAL CONCERT” is a co-production from CMT and Sandbox Productions; Margaret Comeaux (CMT), Jason Owen (Sandbox) and Patrizia DiMaria (Ladypants Productions) are Executive Producers. The Executives in Charge of Production are Jackie Barba and Heather D. Graffagnino. Leslie Fram is Executive in Charge of Talent. Shanna Strassberg and Donna Duncan are Talent Producers.

About The Judds:

Wynonna and Naomi Judd brought a fresh acoustic sound to country music, with unmistakable harmonies surrounding Wynonna’s powerful lead vocals and Naomi’s unshakable creative drive. The Judds are often celebrated for a rarely-interrupted stretch of 14 No. 1 hits when every single of theirs released by RCA landed in the Billboard Top 10; and a career that defined what it means to be individualists in the music business. The Judds dominated touring in the 80s with 20 Top 10 hits, have sold more than 20 million albums and blazed a trail for duos and women who have followed them. Together, The Judds have 16 Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum albums and longform videos, led by 2x Platinum albums Why Not Me and The Judds Greatest Hits. Their stripped-back style revived the popularity of acoustic sounds in country music and opened up the genre for more traditional approaches.

About The Murphy Center:

The Nov. 3 Judds concert will become the centerpiece of Middle Tennessee State University’s yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of its iconic Murphy Center, which opened on Dec. 11, 1972. The “Glass House” is home to MTSU men’s and women’s basketball as well as university and high school graduation ceremonies, concerts and state high school basketball championships. For more than two decades, it was the Nashville area’s premier entertainment venue, hosting The Judds’ nationally televised farewell concert in 1991, as well as five Elvis Presley performances and concerts by superstars such as Elton John, The Who, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash and the Eagles. MTSU announced the completion of a $6 million renovation project for the facility earlier this month, which officials hope will better position the facility to attract future concerts.

About MTSU:

NBC News called MTSU a “Grammy-winner factory” in 2019 in the wake of alumni, students’ and staffers’ multiple nominations and wins from the industry’s top honor MTSU alumni, former or current students, and faculty from across the university have been a part of more than 134 Grammy Award nominations in the last two decades. The number of MTSU-connected Grammy winners since 2001 currently stands at 15 with a total of 37 Grammys, including nine repeat recipients, in categories from classical to pop to rock to country to gospel. MTSU’s Department of Recording Industry — and the College of Media and Entertainment that houses it — marked in 2022 the seventh year on Billboard‘s latest international list of top music business schools, once again earning acclaim for the program’s diversity, depth and longevity.

Tennessee Department Of Tourist Development And Songwriters Celebrate New State Statute Designating “Tennessee Songwriters Week”

Left to Right: Brittni Talley (Nashville Songwriters Association International), Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, Erika Wollam Nichols (General Manager of The Bluebird Cafe), Bettye Crutcher (songwriter), Sen. Rusty Crowe, Kevin Triplett (Commissioner of Tennessee Dept. of Tourist Development), Dickey Lee (songwriter), Pat Alger (songwriter and board chair of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation), Rep. David Hawk, Mark Ford (Executive Director of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame)

Today at the historic Bluebird Cafe, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development celebrated the state statute passed, annually designating the last full week of February as “Tennessee Songwriters Week.”

The week is designed to celebrate the foundation of the craft, recognize songwriters and pave the way for future artists. The historic Bluebird Cafe is where some of the world’s most talented songwriters got their start and where up-and-coming artists perform nightly.

Today, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Pat Alger, known for writing hits like Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” & “Unanswered Prayers” and Nancy Griffith’s “Once in a Very Blue Moon” performed, explained stories behind the songs and shared how the art of songwriting touched his life. Other distinguished songwriters also attended, including: Dickey Lee, whose six-decade career beginning with his first recordings in his hometown of Memphis at Sun Records branched to hits like “I Saw Linda Yesterday,” George Jones’ “She Thinks I Still Care” and “The Keeper of the Stars” (ACM Song of the Year) by Tracy Byrd; and Bettye Crutcher, the most successful female songwriter at legendary Stax Records in Memphis, who co-wrote Johnnie Taylor’s “Who’s Making Love.”

Tennessee Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, Rep. David Hawk, Sen. Rusty Crowe, all prime or co-sponsors of the bill, also joined the festivities.

“Music touches our souls and is a vital part to Tennessee’s culture and heritage,” said Gov. Bill Haslam. “Tennessee musicians have brought us the blues, bluegrass, country, gospel, soul, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll. This law will honor past and present songwriters and inspire future artists to collaborate. I’m honored to sign this law promoting one of our greatest assets and largest exports to the world – Tennessee music.”

Tennessee’s musical roots are the motivation for Tennessee Tourism’s “The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee” brand, which boosted tourism’s economic impact to a record $19.3 billion, and $1.7 billion in state and local taxes.

“Fans from all around the world have been impacted by music recorded in Tennessee, which starts with the crafting of the song itself,” said Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “’Songwriters Week’ celebrates the foundation of the craft for which we are known, music. It recognizes contributions of past, present and future songwriters. Music is a universal language with roots in every direction to Tennessee and is celebrated, performed and heard every day of every week in Tennessee and around the world.”

Local businesses are encouraged to participate in Tennessee Songwriters Week by programming special events such as open mic nights and songwriter showcases that celebrate songwriters and drive visitation. The last week of February was chosen because it’s a time of year that tends to be slower for most Tennessee destinations. To help get the effort started, the Department of Tourist Development has entered into a partnership with Nashville’s famous songwriter venue, The Bluebird Cafe.

During Tennessee Songwriters Week the last full week of February, Tennessee Tourism and The Bluebird Cafe will sponsor open mic nights in Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Johnson City. Bluebird Cafe’s long-time open mic night host, songwriter Barbara Cloyd, will host each night as a panel of local judges and audiences select the top two songwriters from each event. Those eight songwriters will perform at The Bluebird Cafe Sunday, April 7, 2019 during Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival before an audience that includes music publishing professionals.

“Many well-known songwriters have honed their skills here at The Bluebird, starting by performing on our Open Mic shows,” said Erika Wollam Nichols, general manager of The Bluebird Cafe.  “To have the chance to expand our Open Mic throughout the state is so exciting and offers the chance to explore the wealth of songwriting talent that is inherent to Tennessee.”

“One of Tennessee’s largest exports to the world is its music, which begins with the writing of a song,” said Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver (R-Lancaster), sponsor of bill. Songwriters are the lifeblood of Tennessee music. Great lyrics produce those hit songs that will last regardless of genre. I am thrilled to serve as co-sponsor of the bill honoring and recognizing the creation and inspiration behind the music.”

“Many writers still remain in the shadows of the music business and designating a week to focus the spotlight on the men and women who make the hard work of songwriting look easy confirms Tennessee’s place as the songwriting capital of the world. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has often been the catalyst for drawing attention to the songwriters behind the hits, and their support of our Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame public television show “The Songwriters” is a prime example of their commitment to our craft,” said Pat Alger, songwriter and board chair of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation, Hall of Fame Class of 2010.

Randy Houser & Friends Shine At The Annual Grover Benefit Concert

The Grove Manor

Just outside of Franklin, sits the beautiful gated community called The Grove in College Grove, Tennessee.  This was the site of the annual Grover Benefit Concert last Sunday night, September 24th, at the Grove Manor.

Many residents from this gorgeous residential community attended along with supporters of the charity on the balmy fall evening to enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and the concert while participating in the silent action that included an autographed guitar from Carrie Underwood, signed Mike Fisher hockey stick, signed Vince Gill lyrics, and much more.  All net proceeds raised were donated to Agape Animal Rescue, Williamson County Animal Center, and The First Tee.

The concert took place outside on the lawn of the Grove Manor in front of the pond among soft candlelight sprinkling the beautifully-manicured grounds close to the tastefully-decorated stage that had been set up for the event.  Beginning with a great acoustic set by hit songwriters, Neil Thrasher and Kelley Lovelace, featuring some of their hits made famous by Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, and Randy Houser.  Followed by a fantastic full band performance by Randy Houser, whose vocals are strong as ever and he interacted comfortably with the crowd throughout his set.  Following his performance Steve Cropper, Lee Brice, and Jamey Johnston joined the fun by closing out the night to the delight of the crowd.

Such a wonderful and successful evening for a good cause! We appreciate being invited to enjoy this incredible annual event that was followed the next day by a golf tournament to raise funds for Agape Animal Rescue.

And we strive to match our dogs with the best family possible, working through as many applications as necessary to find a home that offers the dog the most fulfilling, enriched life.

On behalf of all the dogs waiting for a forever family, we thank you for your interest in improving the lives of these deserving animals.

Pilgrimage Festival 2017: Wrap Up

On a normal Saturday in Franklin, Tennessee, you will see people checking out local produce at the Farmers Market. The Factory in Franklin will have a small crowd of people walking around and picking up unique gifts and maybe even making one at Third Coast Clay. This is not your normal Saturday in Franklin, that’s for sure.

An estimated 25,000 people from all over have swarmed in on this quiet town to attend The Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival.  The now widely-known festival all started as a simple idea from festival co-creator and front man of the pop/rock band Better Than Ezra, Kevin Griffin.  Griffin who is also a Franklin resident was on a jog just a few years ago when he passed by The Park at Harlinsdale, a century-old horse farm that sits on 230 acres of land. He envisioned not just a music festival, but an experience that would highlight the diverse musical artists, food, beer, wine, and art that is rooted in Middle Tennessee.

Going into the festival’s third year, they knew they had to make it bigger and that is exactly what happened when co-producer and newly-transplanted icon, Justin Timberlake, asked if he could perform.  In what is one of Timberlake’s only musical appearances of 2017, he doubled the attendance of the previous year and he showed up ready to play for his new hometown!

Closing out the first night of the two-day festival which featured incredible performances I caught by The Avett Brothers, The Shadowboxers, Ruby Amanfu with Steelism, and many more, Timberlake walked out to 25,000 people on their feet and applauding before he sang his first note. Proving that he is a class act, Timberlake forewent a big show opener and instead covered Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”, a prayer of sorts for the state that our country is currently in. With a bow of his head, Timberlake changed gears and ripped through hit after hit.  From “Drink You Away” and “Suit & Tie” to his closing numbers, the monster hits “Can’t Stop This Feeling!”, “Sexy Back”, and “Mirrors”, Timberlake had even the coolest East Nashville hipsters singing every word; making it a point to tell the crowd several times how much he loves his home state of Tennessee and that his new hometown is Franklin. It was clear, however, that no matter how much he loves Tennessee, Tennessee loves him even more!

The evening was highlighted when he reunited with Chris and Morgan Stapleton for the first time since their CMA Awards show duet.  Exchanging verses and taking turns doing each other’s background vocals on three of Stapleton’s songs.  The trio’s harmonies were so flawless that Timberlake’s band, “The Tennessee Kids”, couldn’t stop shaking their heads and neither could the audience.

As the night drew to a close and Timberlake took his final bow, it was clear that The Pilgrimage Festival delivered exactly what they said they would, a unique family-friendly experience that was for everyone! As the crowd filtered out onto Franklin Pike, you could already hear people making plans to come back next year.

Tupelo Honey: Serving The Best Brunch In Franklin

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of eating a tasty brunch at Tupelo Honey in Franklin, just outside of Nashville.  It serves a wide selection southern favorites with a delicious, unique twist.

The interior of Tupelo Honey is spacious, comfortable, and clean with modern decor.  Outside there is also a nice-sized porch to enjoy dining on, as well.

Our service was excellent, both attentive and friendly.  She was also kind enough to offer suggestions since it was my first time there.

First off, started the dining experience with homemade, fresh from the oven biscuits with homemade blueberry jam.  The biscuits were fluffy, mouth-watering, and delectable.  The jam was sweet, succulent, and the perfect pairing.

With such a tempting selection of unique drinks from the bar, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to endulge in one of their special drinks called cherry bomb frosé, an icy and refreshing blend of rosé, mint, lemon, maraschino liqueur, and bourbon cherry juice.  This frozen drink was slightly tart and a terrific concoction.  It was also so pretty, frozen, and pink with a small, artful swirl of darker pink on top, which was maraschino liqueur, served elegantly in a stemmed glass.  Yes, it’s probably what you would call a “girly drink”, just as pretty as it was tasty, and one that I could easily sip on outside on their sizeable porch all day long enjoying the nice, quiet surroundings of the upscale area it is nestled in.

For the main course, I ordered the Tupelo shrimp and grits.  My companion had the Creekstone Farms steak and eggs.  We also shared some of their Shoo Mercy sweet potato pancakes.

The Tupelo shrimp and grits were perfectly seasoned.  Served with an extra side of the flavorful, slightly hot Creole sauce to pour on top to season to taste for more spice.  The shrimp were fresh, nicely-seasoned, and a good size.  The grits, infused with adluh goat cheese, were flavorful and perfectly cooked.  There was also a delicious mixture of chorizo and peperonata in the center.  It was skillfully presented and this savory dish was positively scrumptious from the first bite to the last.

My companion had the Creekstone Farms steak & eggs.  The steak was cooked to perfection, so tender you could cut it easily with just a butter knife.  Served with sides of potato cracklins and maple bourbon bacon jam.  It was tasty, perfectly paired, and mouthwatering.

The Shoo Mercy sweet potato pancakes were hot off the griddle, fluffy, and delightfully-tasty with just the right blend of sweet seasonings.

The menu is priced in the medium range up to low $20s for main dishes.  Not cheap, but not overpriced, either.  Serving portions were generous and all served piping-hot fresh from the kitchen very quickly with attentive, friendly service.

Tupelo Honey is a chain of restaurants across the country serving food all made in a scratch kitchen with a menu that changes with each season and is unique to that location.   This location was opened only 2 years ago.  Located near Cool Springs Mall in Franklin at 2000 Meridian Blvd. on the corner nestled within a new, modern strip mall area.  Brunch is served only on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm.  Operating hours are Monday to Thursday: 11a – 9p. Friday: 11a – 10p. Saturday: 9a – 10p . Sunday: 9a – 8p.  It was named as best new restaurant in Franklin by Franklin Lifestyle Magazine in 2016.

Menus overseen by Chef Eric Gabrynowicz.  He is a four-time James Beard Award semifinalist, Top Newcomer from Zagat was voted Food and Wine Magazine’s “Peoples Best New Chef- New York.” He brings Tupelo Honey Southern inspired dishes that are simply crafted and made from scratch with responsibly sourced ingredients that bring the best of every season.

Tyler Alford is the chief mixologist.  He was born and raised in North Carolina and attended college in Mississippi, where his love of craft cocktails and mixology blossomed. Tyler honed his knowledge and skill while working at the award-winning Commander’s Palace Restaurant in New Orleans before bringing his passion to Tupelo Honey. He quickly introduced a beverage program focused on local, sustainable and quality products with classic techniques that has continued to earn Tupelo Honey multiple local and national awards for its cocktails rooted in the South.

This restaurant is defintely a new favorite of mine that I thoroughly enjoyed, and one that I will frequent as often as I can when in the Franklin area.  I’m already craving their delicious brunch again after just a couple of days.  It offers the best brunch in town in my opinion between the creative selection of tasty food, drinks, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere.  I highly recommend this dining establishment.  Get ready to be pleasantly surprised by such a flavorful, creative menu of southern fare all made from scratch kitchen served fresh and fast.

Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival is a two-day event transforming The Park At Harlinsdale Farm into an oasis of music, food, and culture set against the natural amphitheaters and vistas of this former walking horse farm located in Franklin, TN. Renowned musical acts, many performing acoustically, will be presented on wood-clad stages reflecting the area’s historic aesthetic including The Frye Company Harpeth River Stage. In addition to artists performing their own sets, Pilgrimage will feature Pilgri-mashupswhere one-of-a-kind pairings of musicians collaborate with one another on stage as well as the Kimbro’s Pickin’ Parlor stage featuring local artists. The region’s best food and drink will be on display as well as numerous local artists and artisans creating an all-encompassing festival experience.

The festival debuted last year with a star studded lineup featuring artists such as Willie Nelson, Wilco, Weezer, Sheryl Crow, Cage the Elephant, Band of Horses, Steven Tyler and more with 10,000 fans descending upon the Park at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin each day. Not only will the festival drive tourism dollars to Williamson County but a portion of each ticket sale will benefit the City of Franklin and Franklin Parks. In addition, a portion of ticket sales will also benefit MusiCares®, a nonprofit organization that was established by The Recording Academy® to provide a wide range of emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery resources to members of the music community.
