Tennessee Department Of Tourist Development And Songwriters Celebrate New State Statute Designating “Tennessee Songwriters Week”

Left to Right: Brittni Talley (Nashville Songwriters Association International), Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, Erika Wollam Nichols (General Manager of The Bluebird Cafe), Bettye Crutcher (songwriter), Sen. Rusty Crowe, Kevin Triplett (Commissioner of Tennessee Dept. of Tourist Development), Dickey Lee (songwriter), Pat Alger (songwriter and board chair of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation), Rep. David Hawk, Mark Ford (Executive Director of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame)

Today at the historic Bluebird Cafe, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development celebrated the state statute passed, annually designating the last full week of February as “Tennessee Songwriters Week.”

The week is designed to celebrate the foundation of the craft, recognize songwriters and pave the way for future artists. The historic Bluebird Cafe is where some of the world’s most talented songwriters got their start and where up-and-coming artists perform nightly.

Today, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Pat Alger, known for writing hits like Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” & “Unanswered Prayers” and Nancy Griffith’s “Once in a Very Blue Moon” performed, explained stories behind the songs and shared how the art of songwriting touched his life. Other distinguished songwriters also attended, including: Dickey Lee, whose six-decade career beginning with his first recordings in his hometown of Memphis at Sun Records branched to hits like “I Saw Linda Yesterday,” George Jones’ “She Thinks I Still Care” and “The Keeper of the Stars” (ACM Song of the Year) by Tracy Byrd; and Bettye Crutcher, the most successful female songwriter at legendary Stax Records in Memphis, who co-wrote Johnnie Taylor’s “Who’s Making Love.”

Tennessee Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver, Rep. David Hawk, Sen. Rusty Crowe, all prime or co-sponsors of the bill, also joined the festivities.

“Music touches our souls and is a vital part to Tennessee’s culture and heritage,” said Gov. Bill Haslam. “Tennessee musicians have brought us the blues, bluegrass, country, gospel, soul, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll. This law will honor past and present songwriters and inspire future artists to collaborate. I’m honored to sign this law promoting one of our greatest assets and largest exports to the world – Tennessee music.”

Tennessee’s musical roots are the motivation for Tennessee Tourism’s “The Soundtrack of America. Made in Tennessee” brand, which boosted tourism’s economic impact to a record $19.3 billion, and $1.7 billion in state and local taxes.

“Fans from all around the world have been impacted by music recorded in Tennessee, which starts with the crafting of the song itself,” said Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “’Songwriters Week’ celebrates the foundation of the craft for which we are known, music. It recognizes contributions of past, present and future songwriters. Music is a universal language with roots in every direction to Tennessee and is celebrated, performed and heard every day of every week in Tennessee and around the world.”

Local businesses are encouraged to participate in Tennessee Songwriters Week by programming special events such as open mic nights and songwriter showcases that celebrate songwriters and drive visitation. The last week of February was chosen because it’s a time of year that tends to be slower for most Tennessee destinations. To help get the effort started, the Department of Tourist Development has entered into a partnership with Nashville’s famous songwriter venue, The Bluebird Cafe.

During Tennessee Songwriters Week the last full week of February, Tennessee Tourism and The Bluebird Cafe will sponsor open mic nights in Memphis, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Johnson City. Bluebird Cafe’s long-time open mic night host, songwriter Barbara Cloyd, will host each night as a panel of local judges and audiences select the top two songwriters from each event. Those eight songwriters will perform at The Bluebird Cafe Sunday, April 7, 2019 during Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival before an audience that includes music publishing professionals.

“Many well-known songwriters have honed their skills here at The Bluebird, starting by performing on our Open Mic shows,” said Erika Wollam Nichols, general manager of The Bluebird Cafe.  “To have the chance to expand our Open Mic throughout the state is so exciting and offers the chance to explore the wealth of songwriting talent that is inherent to Tennessee.”

“One of Tennessee’s largest exports to the world is its music, which begins with the writing of a song,” said Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver (R-Lancaster), sponsor of bill. Songwriters are the lifeblood of Tennessee music. Great lyrics produce those hit songs that will last regardless of genre. I am thrilled to serve as co-sponsor of the bill honoring and recognizing the creation and inspiration behind the music.”

“Many writers still remain in the shadows of the music business and designating a week to focus the spotlight on the men and women who make the hard work of songwriting look easy confirms Tennessee’s place as the songwriting capital of the world. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has often been the catalyst for drawing attention to the songwriters behind the hits, and their support of our Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame public television show “The Songwriters” is a prime example of their commitment to our craft,” said Pat Alger, songwriter and board chair of Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Foundation, Hall of Fame Class of 2010.

Sugarland’s New Album & Tour Launch To Stellar Reviews

‘STILL THE SAME’ 2018 Tour Kicks Off To Stellar Reviews
“Sugarland has found a way to stay in touch, with their audience and the broader world, by enlarging their scope on Bigger, and that’s no small feat.” – NPR Music

“Few artists can meld the joyful and the thoughtful as exuberantly as the country-pop duo do on their sixth studio album.”
Entertainment Weekly

“The duo is very much still the same. Its chemistry is there. Their trust in each other is intact. Their creative vision is in lockstep.” – The Tennessean

“Sugarland haven’t missed a step. Bigger is, as the name suggests, an extrapolation of everything that made the celebrated pop country duo one of the biggest acts of the 2000s.” – Wide Open Country

GRAMMY® Award-winning superstar duo SUGARLAND are celebrating the release of their critically acclaimed sixth studio record BIGGER, which arrived on June 8 via a joint venture with Big Machine Records and UMG Nashville. The duo recently appeared on the TODAY Show on NBC to perform a captivating rendition of “Babe”, their newest single from the album. The track was written by Taylor Swift and is currently in the Top 30 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart and at Country radio. Watch the performance HERE now.

Returning from a hiatus that saw both Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush release highly praised solo albums, BIGGER marks Sugarland’s first new album in eight years. Bush and Nettles co-wrote nearly all of the songs on the album, and have so far been drawing praise across the board from critics and fans alike. BIGGER is now available digitally and physically HERE.

BIGGER embodies the musical spirit that fans have come to expect from Sugarland, combining upbeat tracks with powerful message songs that address specific issues facing the world today and spark conversations for tomorrow. “Our hopefulness and our sparkiness and our joy are things I think we do uniquely well, especially in the country format,” says Jennifer of the set’s sunnier material. “We offer that in a unique way.” Bush added, “My daughter is turning 13. I wondered if there was a way to help her through the world she’s growing up in. There are songs on this album that are inspired by the idea of that conversation, and I hope they will speak to people of all ages, no matter who they are or what they’re facing in life.”

Sugarland also just wrapped a successful first leg of tour dates on their STILL THE SAME 2018 TOUR. The headline run kicked off in their home state of Georgia on May 25 and will crisscross its way through 49 cities in North America this summer. Brandy Clark and Clare Bowen will provide support through July 14, while Frankie Ballard and Lindsay Ell will join the lineup from July 19 through September 9. For tickets and a full list of dates, please see below or visit HERE. Reviews and reactions from the first few dates have already been glowing:

“[A] bright, playful show” – Atlanta Journal Constitution

“No matter how much time has passed, the pair can, clearly, pick back up right where they left off.” – The Spokesman Review

Since the band’s inception in 2002, Sugarland has sold nearly 10 million albums domestically, earned seven No. 1 singles to date and amassed more than 330 million on-demand streams, making Sugarland one of the most popular Country music duos of all time.

Newcomer Abi Unveils New Music Video For Breakout Single “A Day Without”

In May, twenty-year-old country music songstress Abi, released her breakout single “A Day Without” to critical acclaim. Upon its debut, “A Day Without” landed on Rolling Stone Country’s “10 Best Country and Americana Songs of the Week” and Taste of Country dubbed the track, “the kind of tightly-worded, universal artist statement a country newcomer needs to take a serious step forward.” The song’s strong connection to the passing of Abi’s father makes this debut especially appropriate.

Abi shares, “’A Day Without’ brings on a lot of different emotions for me. The sheer thought of losing someone is absolutely terrifying, as is the deep love you might have for a person with who you might feel like you cannot go on a day without them…I think that my father’s passing gave me a new perspective on life, and enabled me to channel much deeper emotions into my craft.”

For the video’s concept, Abi remained true to the song’s meaning in her own words, while leaving it open to the listener for interpretation. “We chose to focus on two themes of love and separation,” says Abi.  “So we chose a mother sending her child off to college for the first time and a girlfriend sending her boyfriend off into the military. Emotionally, I’m definitely very connected with the idea of separation,” she adds.

Inspired by everything from the marvelous pop expanse of The Beatles and Shania Twain, to the “storytelling” of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, Abi crafted her first song in third grade. She has since developed into a powerhouse vocalist and songwriter, with an impressive resume under her belt. In 2014, Abi joined Jesse McCartney’s North American tour and 2015 saw Kelly Clarkson handpick Abi to open her massive summer headline run, while she hit the road alongside Pentatonix a year later. In 2017, her single “Matches” independently caught fire; striking the sweet spot between simmering country soul, twanging guitars and a fierce hook – “Light me up ‘cause baby we’re matches” – CMT fanned the flames an early champion.

Alan Jackson Enters Songwriters Hall Of Fame

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 14: Steven Tyler and Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee Alan Jackson pose backstage during the Songwriters Hall of Fame 49th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner at New York Marriott Marquis Hotel on June 14, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Larry Busacca/Getty Images for Songwriters Hall Of Fame) *** Local Caption *** Steven Tyler; Alan Jackson Photo Credit: (Larry Busacca/Getty Images)

“It’s such an honor to be included with all these people,” a humble and visibly moved Alan Jackson said as he became a member of the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual induction gala in New York City Thursday/last night.

Already a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jackson’s latest career-defining honor places him alongside the greatest composers of all-time – from the likes of Irving Berlin and Cole Porter…to Motown greats Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Eddie Holland…John Lennon and Paul McCartney…film icons John Williams and Henry Mancini…rock greats Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards…R&B legends Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye…and country standard-bearers Merle Haggard, Harlan Howard, Kris Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson.

“Tonight is special because it honors Alan for his greatest qualities – his words, his music, his imagination, his imagery, his honesty,” said longtime producer, songwriter and friend Keith Stegall, who presided over Jackson’s induction. “He is fearless; nothing is ever off limits.” Alan has a career-spanning partnership with Stegall, who also performed “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” a song the pair co-wrote with Roger Murrah.

“Most people I know are just working, trying to make a living, raise children, have a good time and enjoy life. Sometimes their lives are already hard…and they just want something that makes ‘em feel good or helps them get through a hard time – music is a relief from some of that sometimes,” Jackson noted as he received songwriting’s highest honor. “Keith said I’m just a singer of simple songs. And I am.”

To illustrate his point, the country icon shared a little-known story prompted by a backstage encounter moments earlier. “I ran into Clive Davis; hadn’t seen him in years. He was always real supportive of my writing early on,” he shared, “One day I wrote this song – it was for a woman. I couldn’t sing it. I called Clive [and said], ‘I believe Whitney [Houston] could sing this thing.’ He listened to it…called me back and said, ‘Boy, that’s a sweet song’.” Jackson brought the house down with laughter when he concluded, “He said, ‘But I’ll be honest with you, Alan – I don’t think Whitney has seen a washing machine in 15 years. I don’t think she could sing that’.” With that, the humble inductee noted, “I guess what I’m trying to say is I’ll always be writing about washing machines.” Jackson then offered up another of his signature songs, the simple-yet-stirring self-penned, “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning).”

Jackson’s songwriting credits – saluted with his Songwriters Hall of Fame induction – are part of the fabric of modern country music. Beginning with his debut hit, “Here in the Real World,” and continuing as he began “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” Jackson’s personal observations on the world we live in have resonated – and continue to do so – around the globe. His pen has given us the haunting “Midnight in Montgomery”…the wistful “Remember When”…the life-celebrating “Drive”…the poignant “Little Man”…and the instantly-recognizable “Chattahoochee.” He’s shared life experiences with us in music and words; in fact, he’s been a songwriter on 24 of 35 chart-topping songs he’s recorded, the kind of accomplishment reserved for the likes of Haggard, Lennon and McCartney.

Jackson’s fellow inductees also honored at Thursday’s ceremony were John Mellencamp, Robert “Kool” Bell, Ronald Bell, George Brown & James “JT” Taylor of Kool & the Gang, Jermaine Dupri, Allee Willis, Steve Dorff and Jackson’s fellow Grand Ole Opry member Bill Anderson. Hall of Famer Neil Diamond, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles and veteran music executive Lucian Grainge were honored with other career awards.

Prior to Thursday’s induction, Jackson reflected on his songwriting in a comprehensive interview with Billboard and with Spotify, where he was showcased in a new installment of their Hot Country profile series.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of composers and lyricists who create music. It celebrates and honors the contributions of our great popular music songwriters, while developing new writing talent through workshops, showcases, scholarships, and digital initiatives. Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame honors those whose work represents a spectrum of the most beloved songs from the world’s popular music songbook. To qualify for induction, a songwriter must be a published writer for a minimum of 20 years with a notable catalog of hit songs. Jackson is one of just over 400 songwriters so honored.

Jackson’s induction to the Songwriters Hall of Fame comes just a year after he was enshrined as a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the latest in a long line of accolades that include three CMA Entertainer of the Year honors, more than 25 years of membership in the Grand Ole Opry, a 2016 Billboard ranking as one of the Top 10 Country Artists of All-Time, induction to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Heritage Award as the most-performed country songwriter-artist of ASCAP’s first 100 years. On August 22, Alan will be saluted by the Academy of Country Music at the annual ACM Honors event in Nashville as the recipient of this year’s Cliffie Stone Icon Award, one of the organization’s highest honors, given to artists or industry leaders who have “advanced the popularity of the genre through their contributions in multiple facets of the industry such as songwriting, recording, production, touring, film, television, literary works, philanthropic contributions and other goodwill efforts.”
