Throughout the night, the three Opry members sat at a CDC-recommended social distance, playing for a minimal crew in the Opry House and for fans around the globe. Accompanying each other on their acoustic instruments, the three swapped  stories and songs, including Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” Stuart’s “Hobo’s Prayer” and Paisley’s “Mud On The Tires,” among others.

Gill opened the show with an emotional performance of “Sweet Music Man,” written by and recorded by Kenny Rogers, as a tribute to the music legend who passed away last night.  Gill said it was “one of my favorite songs Kenny ever did.”

Brad Paisley gave “a shout out to those working overtime tonight,” paying tribute to healthcare workers, saying “to those out there on the front lines of this war, God bless you. We’re going to keep playing music for you one way or another.” He then performed his hit “This Is Country Music,” which he ended with an ode to the Rogers classic “The Gambler.”

Kenny Rogers Passes Away At 81

Kenny Rogers had one of the most successful nights of his career, here he won Male Vocalist of the Year at “The 13th Annual CMA Awards” on Oct. 8, 1979, at the Grand Ole Opry House, live telecast on the CBS Television Network. Other nominees for Male Vocalist of the Year were John Conlee, Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers, Willie Nelson and Don Williams. His album The Gambler also won Album of the Year, other nominees for it were John Conlee, Willie Nelson and Leon Russell and Johnny Paycheck.

Kenny Rogers, one of this century’s most legendary artists who treated the world to such classic hits as “The Gambler” and “Islands in the Stream,” passed away Friday, March 20, his family shared. He was 81.

“Kenny was one of those artists who transcended beyond one format and geographic borders,” says Sarah Trahern, Chief Executive Officer of the Country Music Association. “He was a global superstar who helped introduce Country Music to audiences all around the world. I had the pleasure of working with him over the years and I’ll always remember his graciousness and kind heart. He has left us with his music, some of which will go down as the most memorable performances in Country Music history. Our condolences go out to his family and friends at this sad time.”

Rogers parlayed a distinctive, husky voice and laid-back sex appeal into durable superstardom. Between 1977 and 1987 he logged 20 No. 1 Country hits, many of which climbed the pop charts. During his lengthy career the international star sold more than 50 million albums in the United States alone. Rogers was a five-time CMA Award-winner and entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013.

Kenny Rogers is inducted into CMA’s Country Music Hall of Fame during a news conference on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.

Rogers entered Country Music with a broad musical background. Growing up in public housing in Houston, he was exposed to R&B, pop, and jazz as well as Country. His first professional group was a late-1950s vocal act called the Scholars, which had local hits in Houston. “That Crazy Feeling,” a 1958 solo hit on Carlton Records, earned him an appearance on “American Bandstand.”

During the early 1960s, Rogers played bass, and occasionally sang, in a Houston jazz trio. Membership in the New Christy Minstrels folk group spurred the founding of the First Edition, in which Rogers and other former Minstrels mixed folk, rock and Country sounds. The new group went to No. 5 on the pop chart in 1967 with Mickey Newbury’s psychedelic “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” and gained several additional pop hits on Reprise Records.

After the group’s breakup in 1974, producer/executive Larry Butler signed Rogers to United Artists Records, on which he had modest hits until the stunning success of the mournfully catchy, Grammy-winning “Lucille” in 1977, which reached No. 1 on the Country chart and No. 5 on the pop chart. For the next dozen years Rogers logged hit after hit, including “The Gambler” (1978-79), penned by Don Schlitz, “She Believes in Me” (1979) and “Coward of the County” (1979-80). In 1980, on Liberty Records, Rogers’ No. 1 Country hit “Lady,” a romantic ballad written by pop star Lionel Richie, ruled the pop charts for six weeks. Successful duets included “Every Time Two Fools Collide” with Dottie West (1978) and the crossover smash “Don’t Fall in Love with a Dreamer” with Kim Carnes (1980). In addition to his five CMA Awards wins, Rogers piled up three Grammys as the Country-pop era reached a peak, adding to his stature as one of Country’s first artists to sell out arena shows.

Already a veteran TV performer, Rogers gained further exposure through acting in made-for-television movies, including a series of five treatments of “The Gambler.” His hit “Love the World Away” was a theme song in the era-defining 1980 film “Urban Cowboy.” The 1980s also saw hits on Liberty and RCA, including “Love Will Turn You Around” (1982), the Sheena Easton duet “We’ve Got Tonight” (1983), and the memorable Dolly Parton duet “Islands in the Stream” (1983), all Country No. 1s that made the pop charts. Rogers appeared front and center in the megastar collaboration “We Are the World” (1985), scoring additional chart-toppers such as “Crazy,” “Real Love,” and the sensual George Martin-produced “Morning Desire.” But the solo hit “Tomb of the Unknown Love” (1986) and the Ronnie Milsap duet “Make No Mistake, She’s Mine” (1986) were Rogers’s last No. 1 Country records until “Buy Me a Rose” (1999-2000), recorded with Alison Krauss and Billy Dean.

Rogers’ crossover approach began to work against him as pop took on a harder edge and younger Country artists went back to the music’s roots. Nevertheless, he invested in Branson, MO, ventures, published several well-received photography books, authored two children’s books, engaged in major philanthropic endeavors, and launched a chain of restaurants. Though his chart success slipped in the late 1980s and 1990s through stints with Giant, Atlantic, Reprise and Magnatone, “Buy Me a Rose” (on Dreamcatcher) gave him a boost at the outset of the 21st century. He continued to tour and released hits collections and albums of new material, the latter including “Water & Bridges” (Capitol Nashville, 2006), which yielded the Top 20 hit “I Can’t Unlove You.”

Kane Brown Continues To Make Strides In Country Music With Several Career Achievement Awards

4X AMA winner Kane Brown just received word of three new certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Brown’s self-titled debut album, a 13-week No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, has been upgraded to 2X Platinum. With this album, Brown made history by becoming the first artist to top all five Billboard Country Charts with his breakthrough No. 1 Top Country Album; No. 1 debuting Country Digital Song, the 5X Platinum “Heaven,” and No. 1 Country Airplay, Hot Country Song and Country Streaming Song, the 5X Platinum “What Ifs” featuring Lauren Alaina.

Furthermore, Brown’s No. 1 Billboard 200 Experiment has been officially certified Platinum, and becomes the only country album released since November 2018 to achieve this RIAA award status. With his Platinum Experiment and 2X Platinum Kane Brown, the 26-year-old entertainer joins Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood as the only artists to score Platinum and Multi-Platinum certifications so far in 2020. Of all the country artists who made their long-form debut since 2016, Brown is the only one to receive two or more Platinum album certifications.

Kane Brown received a third RIAA award for “Homesick,” now Platinum-certified. Coinciding with its second week at No. 1 on Billboard and Country Aircheck/Mediabase airplay charts, “Homesick” was co-written by Brown, Brock Berryhill, Matthew McGinn and Taylor Phillips and produced by Dann Huff. Preceded by “Good As You” and “Lose It,” this is the third No. 1 Platinum hit from Brown’s Experiment album. The singer-songwriter extends his career total of No. 1 singles to five which includes his 5X Platinum-certified hits “What Ifs” featuring Lauren Alaina and “Heaven” from his 2X Platinum self-titled debut album. Also, Kane Brown increases his Platinum-certified singles tally to seven.

Global entertainer Kane Brown has been called “the future of country” (Billboard), “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” in 2018 (Associated Press) and one of “31 People Changing the South” (Time). With the chart-topping Billboard 200 release of his album Experiment in Nov. 2018, Brown became the only male country artist in more than 24 years to have his sophomore album debut at the top of this chart. The ACM, People’s Choice, Billboard and iHeartRadio Music Awards nominated artist is one of only five country acts with multiple 5X Platinum hits (joining Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt and Taylor Swift). His two 5X Platinum songs are “Heaven” and “What Ifs” which, respectively, are the No. 3 and No. 5 most-streamed country tracks of all time – making him the only artist to have two tracks in the Top 5 of country’s most-streamed songs. A recent milestone is Brown being in the company of only 10 other country artists who have sold-out the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which he accomplished on Jan. 9 when he headlined the historic venue’s 20th anniversary celebration. In Feb., he kicked off his “Worldwide Beautiful Tour” including U.S. dates in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. Among Kane Brown’s multiple musical collaborations, the most recent is Marshmello and Brown’s Platinum-certified “One Thing Right,” a Top 15 hit at Top 40 radio which also crossed to Hot AC.

“Music Unites”
Online Benefit Concert For MusiCares®,
Hosted By Cody Webb Friday, March 20, 2020 At 8/7c

Nashville, Tenn., (March 19, 2020)— With unprecedented cancellations affecting the music industry and impacting the livelihood of artists, songwriters, and the industry as a whole, singer/songwriter Cody Webb, in collaboration with his record label, Copperline Music Group, has coordinated “Music Unites,” a free online concert to benefit MusiCares®, live on Facebook,Friday, March 20, at 8/7c.  Webb along with Edwin McCain, James Otto, The Davisson Brothers, Hudson Moore, Big Vinny from Trailer Choir, Lewis Brice, Dean Miller and more, will join the live stream from their living rooms. View broadcast HERE.

“Artists are just not used to ‘social-distancing.’ We thrive on human interaction and performing for our fans,” explains Webb. “With all the concerts and events being canceled, I can’t count the number of conversations I’ve had with my fellow bandmates and industry friends on the uncertainty of our livelihood and future.  The fear is real and I could not think of a better way to connect and do something for the betterment of the whole and raise money for MusiCares.”

Earlier this week the Recording Academy and its affiliated charitable foundation, MusiCares®, announced the creation of the COVID-19 Relief Fund to help people in the music industry affected by the pandemic. This fund will be used to directly support those in the music community with the greatest need.

Compounding the economic effect on our friends and family is having to deal with the fear that comes from social isolation and the lack of personal interaction with others. Now more than ever, we need to find solutions to connect and support one another.

The “Music Unites” online benefit concert has a growing list of artists and songwriters set to perform 15-minute segments starting at 8/7c and continuing throughout the evening with no end time yet established.  A Facebook donate button connected to MusiCares® will be attached to the live stream or donate directly to https://www.grammy.com/MusiCares/CoronavirusReliefFun
