Our Favorite Moments From CMA Music Festival 2017

Garth Brooks performs on night one of CMA Music Festival as a surprise guest. Photo credit: Courtney Davidson

CMA Music Festival is always one of our favorite times of the year when downtown Nashville is filled with country music and fans from around the world converge on our great city.

We thought we would relive some of our favorite moments from the festival in anticipation of it airing on ABC on August 16th beginning at 7pm/central, and because we just want to go back.

1) It put a smile on our faces to walk across the pedistrian bridge first thing on Thursday and spot all those people decked out in pink walking with all those cute dogs in Miranda Lambert’s Muttnation to help get numerous dogs needing a forever home adopted.  Loved the start and could not have asked for a more perfect day to start the festival.

2) Who didn’t love it when Garth Brooks surprised us on night one of the nightly concerts at Nissan Stadium? Always the consummate entertainer, and we loved every minute of it.

3) We loved Warner Music night at Ascend Amphitheatre and hearing new artist Cale Dodds.  Such personality and great songs.  One to watch.

4) Interviewing Luke Pell and getting to see him perform live for the first time on the Chevy Park stage.  Nice, talented guy who most will remember from Jojo’s season of “The Bachelorette”.

5) Attending High Valley’s fan club party at Warner Music on Music Row.  Sometimes it was just nice to get away from all the hustle & bustle downtown.  High Valley especially impressed.  Loved their harmonies and hearing them live for the first time.   They have this great blend of traditional country blended with today’s radio-friendly sound as they incorporate lots of the bluegrass instruments missing from most country artists’ music today.

6) Attending anything over at Warner Music for the Warner Sound during the festival with the cool Bic Lounge offering men free shaves and everyone 21 & up free drinks.  It was very relaxing just being over there.

7) Attending Sofar Nashville, a surprise pop-up show that happened at Warner Music on Music Row.  We especially loved Australian artist Morgan Evans signed to Warner Music and engaged to Kelsea Ballerini.  Great personality, voice, and good music.  It was a relaxing time.

8) City of Hope celebrity softball game is always a fun time, but it sure was hot out there that day.  Still fun and they broke their record for attendance this year.

9) Pandora’s “Sounds Like Country” concert was a fun time.  Boy, that line seemed neverending to get in, but worth it to see RaeLynn, Old Dominion, and Jake Owen at Marathon Music Works.

10) The Pepsi Firehouse was a cool experience with great food, specialty drinks, a chance to hear some new music from a few up and coming artists, and getting to see Devin Dawson perform an intimate set in a very cool setting.

Bonus: Kicking off the festival with Sony’s LANco at Flipside in 12South area enjoying drinks and checking out their new mural inspired by their new single, “American Love Story”, painted by artist Neon Lumberjack.

Don’t miss CMA Music Festival airing on ABC on August 16th at 7pm/central to see many of the nightly performances hosted by Thomas Rhett and Kelsea Ballerini.

Curb Introduces Little Feather With “Hillbilly Love Song (Hey Y’all)”

Curb Records announces the signing of award-winning group Little Feather, whose debut single premieres today on Huffington Post .  The single “Hillbilly Love Song (Hey Y’all)” is available here. This autobiographical debut single release showcases the band’s organically-optimisitic acoustic playing, and the lead singer’s vintage-modern vocal skills.  The forthcoming self-titled album will be released September 29.

The acoustic driven band is fronted by lead vocalist Liz Sharpe.  Steeped in tradition, Liz is a coal miner’s daughter with a family lineage that connects the young Pikeville, Kentucky singer to award-winning traditionalist Patty Loveless and to the Queen of Country herself, Loretta Lynn.

Liz’s resumé reads like a New York Times best seller including lending harmonies for such diverse acts as Holly Williams and Michael Bolton.  She penned a song titled “Float Along, Little Feather,” and upon careful listening she knew she was onto a sound that she wanted to explore deeper.  She and her husband, Aaron Spraggs (drums), approached Dylan Rowe (bass player), Sam Brooker (rhythm guitar and harmony), Shannon Campbell (guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmony and Glen Campbell’s son), and Pat Boyer (guitar and slide).  Thus, Little Feather was born.  Take one listen to the music and you’ll hear why this new generation of rustic, heart-on-the-sleeve sound is quickly attracting the ears of many listeners.

The easy-going, fun-loving band has been blowing up social media with their innovative “Drive-Thru Concert” series on Facebook and YouTube. They literally pile into a van, order a meal, and then pick and sing their way to the drive-thru window causing impromptu reactions by employees who can’t help but start dancing and singing along with them.  The videos, which have amassed nearly two million views, have gone over so well that earlier this month Little Feather enjoyed their first taste of success by winning a Silver Telly Award in the Music Video category at the 38th Annual Telly Awards that honors the best in film and video.

“Words can’t express how happy my band and I are to share our music with the world,” says Liz Sharpe.  “The music has been incubating for awhile now, but Little Feather is getting ready to fly!”

Little Feather’s self-titled debut album on Curb will be released on September 29.  To learn more visit Little Feather.  Follow them on Instagram @littlefeatherband, Twitter @lilfeathermusic and

Sara Evans Offers Advice To Young Female Artists At Change The Conversation Event

Country music star Sara Evans joined members of Change The Conversation last night, where she spoke candidly about her personal and professional journey and performed several songs from her new album, Words, on Tuesday from The Steps at WME.

In addition to performing the title track from the album set for a July 21 release, Evans also debuted new songs “All the Love You Left Me” and “Marquee Sign,” as well as an acoustic version of platinum chart-topper “A Little Bit Stronger.”

This is a landmark project for Evans as the first release on her new label, Born To Fly Records. Fourteen female songwriters, including powerhouses Ashley Monroe, Caitlyn Smith, Hillary Lindsey, Hillary Scott, Liz Hengber, Sonya Isaacs and of course Evans herself, contribute their words to the stunning, upcoming record.

“I want to talk about why we need to change the conversation,” Evans said during the event. “When I first got my record deal, women were dominating country radio. We had Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, LeAnn Rimes, Shania Twain, Patty Loveless and on and on. I was fortunate enough to join that group of amazing women.

“So we need to change the conversation and figure out why it is not that way anymore. Why are there not enough women on country radio? Women artists are amazing and they have so much great music that we want to hear and we need to hear, so let’s change the conversation.”

Change the Conversation is a coalition designed to help create an even playing field for women in country music and was formed by Tracy Gershon, Beverly Keel and Leslie Fram in 2014.

It was formed initially to create an informal salon-like atmosphere where women could get together and develop productive ways of solving the problem but has quickly grown into an organization of gaining influence. The organization funds research and hosts events where industry experts address their segments of the industry.

The event, which was sponsored by WME and One Hope Wine, began with a conversation between Evans and Tracy Gershon, a co-founder of Change the Conversation who also helped with A&R duties for this album. “Sara Evans has been one of the most influential and admired country artists of the last two decades, so when she spoke about the importance of changing the conversation, the female artists in the room were inspired and invigorated,” Gershon says.

Adds Change the Conversation co-founder Leslie Fram, “Sara’s impact is undeniable and she proved it again during her performance for Change The Conversation at WME.  After the performance, so many artists said they were moved by the power of her new songs and vocals.”

About Sara Evans: Multi-platinum entertainer SARA EVANS is at the top of her game. With five No. 1 Country singles including “No Place That Far,” “Suds In The Bucket, “A Real Fine Place To Start,” “Born to Fly,” and “A Little Bit Stronger,” which spent 2 weeks in the top spot and was certified platinum by the R.I.A.A., Sara thrills audiences across the U.S. playing close to 100 shows each year. Her “stunning, country voice” (Rolling Stone) has earned her the prestigious Academy of Country Music Top Female vocalist accolade as well as numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Country Music Association, CMT and Grammy Awards nominations. In addition, the CMA awarded Video of the Year honors for her hit chart-topping single, “Born to Fly” from her double-platinum album of the same name. In 2014 Evans released her critically acclaimed seventh studio album Slow Me Down, which debuted at #2 on the Country Album Chart and landed in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, winning over fans and media alike and dubbed her best album to date. Named one of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People,” Evans’ career also includes the platinum-selling studio albums Real Fine Place and Restless and the gold-certified No Place That Far. Sara continues to forge a bold, creative path with the launch of Born To Fly Records, distributed by Sony RED, and will release her highly anticipated eighth studio album, Words, on July 21, 2017.

In addition to a prolific country music career, Sara is an accomplished author, lifestyle blogger and Red Cross ambassador who in 2008 was presented with the national Crystal Cross award for her work with the disaster-relief organization.

Dierks Bentley Celebrated His 16th #1, “Black”, In Nashville

Pictured (l-r): Ross Copperman, Dierks Bentley, Ashley Gorley

Multi-Platinum singer-songwriter Dierks Bentley celebrated his 16th career #1 as an artist and 13th #1 as a songwriter behind “Black” with industry friends and media alike, as they were treated to a chic party by performing rights organizations ASCAP and BMI hosted yesterday (6/22) at Nashville’s new restaurant Hemingway’s Bar & Hideaway. Serving as the third consecutive chart topper off Bentley’s critically acclaimed album BLACK (Capitol Records Nashville), the Gold-certified single and most personal song to date for Bentley was co-written alongside ASCAP songwriter Ashley Gorley, who celebrated his 33rd #1 song, and BMI songwriter Ross Copperman, who celebrated his 16th, and was produced by Copperman along with Arturo Buenahora. Both Copperman and Gorley were named Country Music Songwriter of the Year by their respective PROs in 2016.

”Black” hit the top of the charts exactly one year after the release of Bentley’s “most fully-formed LP of his career” (TIME), and further illustrates Bentley’s depth and diversity as an artist as the smash hit follows the chart-topping Platinum-certified and award winning hits “Somewhere On A Beach” and “Different For Girls.” BLACK serves as one of only two Country albums released since last May that has been certified Gold while simultaneously spawning three certified songs by the RIAA. All three chart toppers released from the multi-nominated Album of the Year record have have seen more than 389 million digital streams.

Also on hand to celebrate the song were label UMG Nashville’s Cindy Mabe and publishers Combustion Music’s Kenley Flynn, Kobalt’s Jesse Willoughby, Rezolant’s Tim Wipperman, Sony/ATV’s Josh Van Valkenburg and Warner/Chappell’s BJ Hill
About Dierks Bentley
The “king of the breakup song” (Noisey), continues to balance “robust record sales and heavy radio play with acclaim from even those critics who had seemed allergic to Nashville’s output in the past” (Esquire) as all three singles released from his eighth studio album BLACK (Capitol Records Nashville) have now received certifications from the RIAA. “The bluegrass picker, the love song singer and the stadium rocker all packaged together” (Associated Press) has been a Grand Ole Opry member for over a decade and has amassed 16 No. One songs, 13 GRAMMY nominations and countless nominations from CMA, ACM, People Choice and Billboard Music Awards. More than half a million fans have already flooded sold-out arenas and amphitheaters in 2017 across North America to witness the “wildly entertaining affair” (Tampa Bay Times) that is Bentley’s 2017 WHAT THE HELL WORLD TOUR. Special guests Cole Swindell and Jon Pardi round out the full-throttle summer party as Bentley continues “forging ahead into new terrain,” (Hartford Courant). For more information and a full list of tour dates, visit www.dierks.com.
