2017 CMT’s ARTISTS OF THE YEAR: Reaching New Heights & Night Of Healing

On Wednesday, October 18th, CMT hosted its 5th annual ARTISTS OF THE YEAR once again at the beautiful Schermerhorn Symphony Center in downtown Nashville sponsored by RAM Trucks and Variety.

Honorees this year were: Florida Georgia LineKeith Urban, Jason Aldean, Chris Stapleton, Luke Bryan, and Sam Hunt.

In previous years, the night has focused solely on honoring the selected honorees from country music.  However, due to the recent onslaught of devastating events affecting so many in our country from the Route 91 mass shooting in Las Vegas to so many suffering after the damage of several hurricanes, the night turned its focus towards the healing power that can be found in music and remembering those lost this year in the genre.

The crisp fall night began with a lavish pre-party sponsored by Variety in the beautiful main lobby entrance area of the elegant symphony hall.  The wine flowed and decadent hors d’oeuvres were served by an attentive waitstaff along with a vast selection of cheese and fruit from a decorative centerpiece table setting.

Following the pre-party, we were seated inside at tables in the beautifully-decorated performance area of the venue for the prompt start of the live taped show.  Again, an attentive waitstaff took our drink orders throughout the show and made it an enjoyable evening for all in attendance.

Some of the biggest names in the music industry from artists to behind-the-scenes from labels, management, public relations, booking agencies, producers, and many more.  All decked out in beautiful dresses and suits fitting of this elagant occassion.

The show opened with a beautiful and powerful collaboration between Andra Day and Little Big Town setting the perfect tone for the evening with “Rise Up”.

Some of my favorite moments were Lionel Richie’s introduction of Luke Bryan.  He was charming, funny, and does he EVER age?! Keith Urban’s performance of his recent hit and what he has dubbed his “sexiest song” to date when interviewed during his #1 party for this song, “Blue Ain’t Your Color”.  It was raw, poignant, and even sexier than ever, which I did not think was possible, but he nailed it, as always.  The Backstreet Boys sang a beautiful, 5-part harmony version of “Holy” honoring their friends and tourmates, Florida Georgia Line.  I’m especially ready for a full on collaboration between the two vocal groups after what I saw of them at the recent CMT CROSSROADS.

My absolute favorite moment of the evening came at the very end closing out the show as Jason Aldean was honored and took the stage joined by his friends in a show of solidarity: Little Big Town, Chris Stapleton, and Keith Urban.  Luke Bryan introduced them to the stage and explained that Aldean had a hard time trying to select what he would sing to commemorate the evening, that he kept coming back to a classic Tom Petty song he started singing as an artist when he first moved to Nashville, “I Won’t Back Down”.

With the recent passing of this musical legend and the circumstances Jason Aldean found himself in just 2 weeks ago as he performed in Las Vegas and was on stage when the shooting happened, it was a very fitting song selection.  All of the country music industry found itself impacted in some way as it hit home all across Music Row and heartbroken as this tragic occurrence happened at a country music festival in Las Vegas.  A song about strength in the face of adversity and a show of solidarity among a few friends, was a perfect message, heartfelt, and felt very healing for all present.  Near the end of the performance everyone in the audience stood up, unprompted, in a united stand of support and show of strength to clap along.  It was a beautiful moment.

Following the show, we were treated by a fun after party, again sponsored by Variety in the same area as the show took place.  We did have to leave the ornate and elagant room as the catering staff set-up for the after party.  Catering for the night was provided by G Catering.

Everyone was ready to celebrate a very special evening following the show  Again, the cocktails and wine were flowing from open bars.  It was a festive and playful atmosphere this time as waitstaff dressed as delivery staff served guests mini gourmet pizzas in small boxes, Chinese food served in mini Chinese take out boxes from an old-fashioned bicycle in its baskets, with hamburger and taco stands to the sides serving mini boxes topped with the CMT ARTISTS OF THE YEAR logo.

It was a perfect ending to a perfect night, and one that I hope to be fortunate enough to partake in again next fall.

Singer Philip Phillips, who performed Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Backroad” during the show mixing with guests at the after party.

Jason Aldean & friends’ heartfelt version of “I Won’t Back Down” is available now for purchase and downloads from iTunes and Google Play.  All money raised from the sales will be donated to charity and the victims of the recent tragedies.

Record audience numbers were set by the televised airing of this year’s ARTISTS OF THE YEAR on CMT. Soaring well above audience numbers of its airings in the past 4 years.

Album Review: Tyminski | ‘Southern Gothic’

He was the deep, bluegrassy singing voice of George Clooney’s character in ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou’, a GRAMMY winner, and member of Alison Krauss & Union Station.

The new album, ‘Southern Gothic’ from Universal Nashville’s newest addition to their tremendous roster, Tyminski, is quite special. The first time I heard it, it gave me chills and I could not get the music out of my head.  It’s actually kind of indescribable. You can’t fit this one in the genre box. It’s swampy, haunting, cathartic, reflective, a little country, Americana, indie rock even…it’s magnificent and my favorite album to come out in a long time.

Do yourself a favor and buy this album. Grab a glass of wine or whiskey might be a little more appropriate for this one, turn up the volume, and be prepared to feel transported down to the deep southern cities of Savannah and New Orleans through the lyrical imagery of this musical masterpiece.  Imagine cities where Spanish moss hangs low from trees near over 100-year old southern mansions like the Garden District of New Orleans, and around every street corner you know there is some history, often a slightly sorted history that will intrigue you.  It’s just a vibe in both cities that is both unmistakable and indescribable, which is how I would describe this new album from Tyminski.

Better yet, grab a copy of this album, pack your bag, pop it in your car’s cd player, and take a weekend trip yourself down to these beautiful southern cities to see what I mean.  It’s the perfect soundtrack to accompany you along the way, if you decide to live it up and explore what I think inspired this album or at least what I imagine inspired it.

Watch this mesmerizing new video of the title track, “Southern Gothic”, my favorite off the album, by clicking HERE.  You’ll want to watch it over & over like me.

You’re going to love this one.  Buy it today!

Rated 5 out of 5 stars.

The world premiere of The Raven explores Edgar Allan Poe’s dark poem by blending movement with a classical score. 😊

“Selling out a show at Billy Bob’s Texas is no small feat and very rarely does it happen well before the day of show. In fact, the last show to sell out days in advance of a performance was Florida Georgia Line in November 2013,” said Chris Spinks, Marketing Director for Billy Bob’s.

Pardi just released his fourth single “She Ain’t In It,” which impacts radio on Oct. 23rd. He recently celebrated his third, consecutive No. 1 single “Heartache On The Dance Floor” on Mediabase charts. “Heartache On The Dance Floor”  follows the Platinum-selling No. 1 song “Head Over Boots” and three-week No. 1 smash “Dirt On My Boots” from Pardi’s #1 debut and Gold-certified album California Sunrise.

Pardi’s sound is undeniably country and his laid back, fun-loving approach towards life comes through in his music and his raucous live show. The California native’s charisma and authenticity strike a chord with country audiences and fellow artists alike. The rising country star has toured with Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley and Zac Brown Band, and he was hand-picked by country legend Alan Jackson to join him on his 25th anniversary tour. Tyler Farr will also join friends and fellow artists Love and Theft, Florida Georgia Line, Jerrod Niemann, Craig Campbell, Canaan Smith, Trent Tomlinson, The Warren Brothers, and Stevie Monce for a night of hope and healing. The evening will be hosted by SiriusXM The Highway’s Storme Warren, Stephen Baker Liles from Love and Theft and Dee Jay Silver.

Shine for Susie ALS Benefit Concert was formed as a partnership between The ALS Association of Tennessee and the Burchett & Liles Family to raise funds in the fight against ALS. Susie Burchett, mother of Stephen Barker Liles from Love and Theft, was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2017.
Together, our efforts are helping to improve the daily lives of people living with ALS, including Susie’s.
“I’ve had the privilege of helping with many charities through the years, but when the cause touches your life, it changes everything,” said Stephen Barker Liles from Love and Theft. “When my mother was diagnosed with ALS, in March of this year, I was devastated. But I also felt called to make a difference to help her and others through my musical platform. I’m incredibly grateful for some of my dear friends who are joining me to shine light through our music and bring hope to millions.”
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis. For unknown reasons, NFL players are four times as likely to develop ALS and veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS as the general population.
The simple fact is, ALS can strike anyone, anytime.
“There are so many important causes that merit our support,” said Burchett and Liles Family. “Often however, we don’t choose those causes…they choose us. For our family, having our mother, wife, grandmother diagnosed with ALS presented a galvanizing opportunity to support the needed cause of ALS. We hope this event will provide more awareness, funds for research, and financial support to all touched by this debilitating disease.”
For information on sponsorship packages or if you have any additional questions before you purchase, please contact Ashlee Moon at 615.331.5556 or send an email to ashlee.moon@alstn.org.
“We are thrilled to curate this first-of-its-kind unique concert experience for the Tennessee Chapter alongside the Burchett and Liles Family. The enthusiasm and willingness this family has brought to the table to secure some of the industry’s most talented artists to perform is truly amazing. They continue to work tirelessly with our team to create an unforgettable musical experience,” said Steve Wallace, CEO of The ALS Association of Tennessee.

“Our Chapter is truly grateful to have this important partnership and we are thankful to all the musical guests, who have graciously lent their time and talents to support the Association’s efforts in brightening the lives of ALS patients and families in our community,” said Wallace.

About The ALS Association Tennessee ChapterThe ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization fighting ALS on every front.  By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. About Brandon Lay:

EMI Records Nashville’s Brandon Lay grew up in Jackson, Tenn. – in between the blues, soul and rock-and-roll of Memphis and the country music capital of the world in Nashville. Influences from both legendary music cities can be found throughout Brandon’s work including his recently released debut single, “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers.” Co-written by Brandon with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers” is autobiographical and walks listeners through the three biggest influences in his life – music, sports and faith.  The tune sparked an immediate reaction with listeners and quickly impacted the Spotify U.S. Viral chart cresting as high as No. 7.

Brandon, who moved to Nashville in 2010, signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell in 2013 and has been building a devoted following ever since. Brandon co-produced and co-wrote every song on his debut album expected out in 2018.
