Friday night, August 28th in Nashville, TN. was full of notable musicians playing major venues throughout the city, from the new Ascend Amphitheater hosting Old Crow Medicine Show, to Rob Thomas performing at The Ryman Auditorium. Our home for the evening, however, was the prestigious Schermerhorn Symphony Center as Keb’ Mo’ kicked off his 13-city fall tour.

As competitive as it is to sell tickets in Music City, especially on a night like Friday, the multi-genre artist was met with an enthusiastic crowd, filling the Schermerhorn with an almost tangible energy of love and admiration. With a career spanning 14 albums, including his latest critically-acclaimed BLUESAmericana project – which received 3 Grammy nods this year, Keb’ Mo’ manages to maintain a relevant presence with his blend of musical stylings and respected songwriting.

Opening the show with “Everything I Need,” the combination of simplicity and intricacy was all it took to get the listeners’ attention. With songs like “Government Cheese” and “Somebody Hurt You,”  Keb’ had everyone moving in their seats. It’s quite rare to see so many people “chair dancing” at a Schermerhorn performance – which included some familiar faces like Charles Esten and Chris Carmack from the hit show Nashville.

The highlight of the evening was when the Nashville Recording Orchestra strings joined the band. Hearing “Life Is Beautiful” with the orchestral string arrangements was nothing short of mind blowing! Experiencing the joy that Keb’ and his band were feeling incorporated with the strings was simply incredible.

After three standing ovations and an emotionally-charged encore, Keb’ Mo’ ended the night with a touching solo acoustic performance of “Blackbird.”

His voice and guitar playing is flawless. His connection with the audience is pure. It is evident that Keb’ Mo’ lives to inspire. I foresee Keb’ Mo’ inspiring us all for many more years to come and I encourage everyone to see his live show… You may just leave a “changed” person.
