Album Review: ‘Working Man’s Poet: A Tribute To Merle Haggard’ (Various Artists)

Working Man's Poet‘Working Man’s Poet’: A Tribute To Merle Haggard’ was released by Broken Bow Records from executive producer Benny Brown with help from producers Mickey Jack Cones, Derek George, Michael Knox, Jeff Stevens, and Mark Miller.

This 20 track cd is a compilation of beloved hits by country legend Merle Haggard made new again and a tribute to this legendary songwriter/artist.   The new release features many of today’s top artists, such as: Jason Aldean, Randy Houser, Thompson Square, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Jake Owen, Joe Nichols…even the one and only Garth Brooks! It’s a long list of today’s hit makers, and I can’t imagine ANY red-blooded country music fan (new or old, contemporary or traditional fan) NOT loving this release.

Some of the standouts & highlights of this album? Well, first of all, I LOVE the steel guitar & fiddles that are threaded throughout this entire album.  It’s really a throwback to an era of days past in country music.  I’m a big fan of contemporary country, but I also appreciate some really well done traditional country like this album offers.  “Going Where The Lonely Go” with Jason Aldean singing is a standout. “You Take Me For Granted” is beautifully-performed by Thompson Square.  Shawna takes most of the lead vocals in this one, and it’s gorgeous.  “Let’s Chase Each Other Around The Room” with Thompson Square is another standout.  This time, Keifer takes the lead vocals.  “Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down” with Garth Brooks is simply music to my ears.

Not a weak one on the album.  Definitely a MUST HAVE for ANY country fan.  Get it! You won’t be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 stars.
